MADRID, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Atletico Madrid's Argentinean midfielder Maxi Rodriguez said on Sunday that his ambition was to remain at the Spanish Primera Liga club.
Maxi is just starting his fifth season at the club, where he has been a key player since his arrival from Espanyol.
However, this summer did see rumors of him leaving to try his fortunes elsewhere, something Maxi denies.
"I am to remain at this institution for many years," he said on the club's website, before dismissing rumors of his departure.
"Since the first day of my holidays, the rumors have not ended, but I always remained calm," he said.
The main reason for the stories about Maxi leaving the club is that his contract expires at the end of this season, but he said that was not clouding his focus.
"My first aim is to play well and to have a good season. At the moment I am not worried about my contract," said the midfielder.
Finally he turned his attention to this week's Champions League return leg at home to Panathinaikos in the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Atletico won 3-2 in Greece and favorites to progress, although Maxi is taking nothing for granted.
"They are a dangerous side in attack and we have to settle the tie. We can't relax because they will come here with nothing to lose and we have to score at least one goal," he said.
