RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Finishing their first half of the Brazilian Championship, Sao Paulo achieved on Sunday one of their objectives by placing among the top four teams in the tournament.
Beating Sport 2-1, Sao Paulo extended their winning streak to six games, turning their season around after the arrival of the new head coach, Ricardo Gomes.
Despite ending the match with only nine players on the field, Sao Paulo beat last place Sport on the road. Washington scored Sao Paulo's first goal in the 24th minute. Sport tied the match in the 84th minute when Fabiano shot on a loose ball in front of the Sao Paulo net. However, Sao Paulo walked away with the victory due to Hugo's header in injury time.
Sao Paulo, last year's champion, are now standing in fourth place with 33 points. They stand just four points behind the current leader, Palmeiras. Sport did not move up in the ranks and are sitting at the bottom (20) with 13 points.
