Metzelder aims for treble with Real Madrid

MADRID, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder said on Tuesday that his aim for the season was to form part of a side that wins a major trophy.

Metzelder arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu two seasons ago, but a long run of injuries limited his first team chances. Now, however, it looks as if new coach Manuel Pellegrini has placed faith in him and the German is looking forward to playing alongside stars such as Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

"It is an incredible project. Everyone wants to form a part of it. It is not normal to have players such as Kaka, Cristiano and Benzema all playing in the same team."

"There is no doubt this is the best Real Madrid side I have seen, it has all the quality it needs to win titles and I am certain that we will triumph this season and we can all celebrate our wins and the Cibeles fountain," he told sports paper Diario AS.

Last season Real Madrid's bitter rivals won a domestic and European treble and Metzelder promised to try and do the same, although he warned it would not be easy.

"Real Madrid's objective is to win every title. We know it is difficult, but we are going to try and do that," he said.

He also spoke about his role in a side which is best known for its attacking instincts.

"The club has to try and play attacking football and we have got the players to do that, however, Pellegrini is also working on making us a side that is organized and disciplined. He pays a lot of attention to defensive work and wants us to push forward and pressure our opponents," he commented.
