Flamengo, Corinthians to visit Israel before game in Palestine

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Still in the last stages of negotiation, the Brazilian soccer teams of Flamengo and Corinthians announced on Saturday that they plan to stop in Israel before heading to Palestine.

The trip by both teams will be made to play a friendly match promoting peace in the region.

Called "Game for Peace", the Palestine game is unofficially planed to be held on September 15 in city yet identified in Palestinian territory.

Before arriving in Palestine, both teams are expected to visit historical and holly cities in Israel, appeasing the country's soccer fans and political entities.

According to Corinthians president, both teams will be sharing the same airplane in their trip to the Middle East.

They are expected to board in Curitiba after their respective matches on September 12 for the Brazilian soccer championship.

Due to the apparent dissatisfaction of some members of the Jewish community in Israel, the Corinthians have been looking into returning to the country in December in order to play another friendly.

Corinthians star striker Ronaldo, who holds the World Cup record of scoring the most goals for Brazil, is the marquee player of the friendly.

The game may very well serve as his comeback to the fields after having undergone surgery on his left hand as well as a rumored liposuction procedure to get rid of the player's excess body fat.

Ronaldo is scheduled to return to the field by September 10.
