Palmeiras tie Botafogo 1-1 in Brazilian soccer championship

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- In the last match of the first half of play in this year's Brazilian soccer championship, Botafogo and Palmeiras battled on Saturday to a 1-1 tie.

Palmeiras entered this weekend's 19th round of play as the leaders and had hoped to close out the first half on top of the standings while Botafogo entered the game with a new head coach, Estevam Soares, hoping to turn their tournament life around.

Stunning the home crowd of Palmeiras, Botafogo were the first to score in the 23rd minute. Off a stopped ball, Lucio Flavio sentit towards the feet of Andre Lima who blasted it into the net to secure Botafogo's only goal.

In the 32nd minute, Palmeiras tied the game when Cleiton Xaviersent the ball towards the front of the Botafogo net, finding Danilo who headed it into the net.

Palmeiras closed out the first half with 37 points and in first place. However, they have not guaranteed their supremacy as Internacional still had two games yet to play after they won a tournament in Japan nearly one week ago.

For Botafogo, the win took them to 15th place with 20 points. The coach hoped to bring the team back to glory and among the top four teams in this year's tournament in order to qualify for the 2010 Libertadores Cup.
