RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Internacional defeated Santo Andre 2-0 on Saturday in the hunt to win the first half of the Brazilian soccer championship.
Internacional still has two more games to play due to their absence for going abroad to participate in the Suruga Cup. They just came back from Japan with the trophy this week.
Saturday's game continued scoreless up until the 68th minute. Off a touch-and-go with Giuliano, Taison broke through the defense, sized up the ball and blasted it into the left corner of the Santo Andre net.
As the match was winding down, Internacional scored again in the 87th minute. Alecsandro took charge of a penalty kick and sentit into the right corner of the rivals' goal.
With the victory, Internacional took the second place with 33 points, following leaders Palmeiras with 37 points.
With two more victories in both of their remaining games, Internacional could overtake the lead, however.
