Universo takes 2-1 lead over Minas in Brazilian basketball league semifinals

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Universo took a 2-1 lead over Pitorgas/Minas in the New Brazilian Basketball league (NBB) semifinals after a 89-79 home win on Sunday.

Two of the stand-outs from the Brazilian men's national basketball team, Alex and Murilo, dominated the game.

Alex, the point guard for Universo, scored a game-high 29 points while Murilo, the forward for Minas, scored a team-high 25 points and hauled in 13 rebounds in the third game of the best-of-five series.

Despite a second quarter scoring drought, Universo was able to turn around the 13-0 run that Minas put together before halftime and end the third quarter with a 1 point lead.

The two teams will meet in Game 4 on June 2. Flamengo has advanced to the final.
