Chinese women's teams advance in world beach volleyball championships

STAVANGER, Norway, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese women's beach volleyball teams competing in the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships here advanced to the 32-team single-elimination bracket after concluding their pool matches on Wednesday.

The 15th-seeded Zhang Xi/Huang Ying and 23rd-seeded Xue Chen/Zhang Ying both ranked second in their pools with two wins and one loss.

Featuring a total of 1 million U.S. dollars in prize money, the2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships began on June 25 and have drawn 48 men's and 48 women's teams from 32 countries. Both men's and women's teams are playing in 12 pools.

Two Chinese men's teams, Wu Penggen/Yin Rui and Xu Linyin/Li Jialu, are also competing in the event. Both teams now rank third in their pools, with one win and two losses.

The top two teams in each pool and the eight best third-places will advance to the 32-team single-elimination phase, which will begin on Thursday.

The women's medal matches will be played on Saturday, to be followed by the men's podium placement matches on Sunday. The winning teams in each gender share the 60,000-U.S.-dollar first-place prize.
