Japan beat Chinese duo to be crowned China Open men's doubles

SUZHOU, East China, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Top-seeded Japanese Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani lived to their names here Sunday, beating Chinese newly partnered Xu Xin and Zhang Jike for the men's doubles title at the 330,000 U.S. dollars China Open.

The leading duo to Japanese men's table tennis came back from 1-2 down to win over Xu and Zhang 12-10, 4-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9.

"It's a welcome victory though not an easy one for us," said Kishikawa after winning his first men's doubles title with Mizutani in an ITTF Pro Tour ITTF Pro Tour tournament. "I could feel my nerve from the very beginning of the final, since it's a pair from China at the other end of the table. But I managed to tune myself up and played an in-style game."

The Japanese duo, who shocked in Friday's first round the hosts' golden pairing of Olympic title holder Ma Lin and three-time world champion Wang Liqin in straight sets, won a bronze medal in the men's doubles for host Japan at the world championships in Yokohama a month ago, losing only to China's Xu Xin and Ma Long in the semifinals.

Mizutani reckoned the shift of partner for Xu Xin having made the difference.

"We've played a much tougher match in Yokohama against Xu Xin and Ma Long," he said. "For today's game against Xu Xin and Zhang Jike, we found it easy to tell how the duo would react as Zhang seemed to have little special in techniques."

Xu himself, however, could not agree with his Japanese rivals. The teenage sensation of China said: "The only problem with the pairing of Zhang Jike and me is that we are just coming to play the men's doubles together, and have not yet fully adapted it."

"Zhang and Ma play different styles of table tennis. Zhang's more aggressive and Ma's stable. Both of them are very good players," he added.

A table tennis competition between foreign diplomats living in China was held at the Beijing Gymnasium last Saturday.

Some 100 foreign diplomats from 37 embassies and international organizations, including Australia, Pakistan, Venezuela and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), participated in the contest, which was organized by the Maldives embassy in China.

"We are organizing this event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China," Ahmed Latheef, the Maldives Ambassador to China, told chinadaily.com.cn.

Mr. Latheef said that as the national sport of China, ping-pong is "the best choice" for foreign diplomats to commemorate the 60th anniversary.

"It is an important milestone which we thought, as diplomats, will celebrate jointly with the people of China to mark this important occasion." said Mr. Latheef.

As a table tennis player himself, Mr Latheef represented Maldives in table tennis in 1973 at the AAA Friendship Invitational Tournament and in 1990 at the Asian Games.

Being the second of its kind, this year's "Diplomats' Table Tennis Tournament" marked 60th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China".

The first tournament, initiated and also organized by the Maldives embassy in China, was held last year to observe the 50-day countdown to the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Russian embassy became the biggest winner in the end, claiming the team champion, and both the champion and the second place in the men's singles.

The contest included team matches, singles for men and women, as well as a friendly match between the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs team and one made up of foreign diplomats, as in the previous tournament.

"Today's competition is fantastic," said Mr. Ser Sim, Project Manager from the Australian embassy, during a rest session. "It's my second time here and the event is much better organized. I really enjoyed it."

Dr. Bernard Coquelin, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative, readily concurs. But he says there is much more than competition.

"The purpose is the friendship and also partnership among all the diplomats," he explained, "And I think that is a more important message we should really put forward for all the international communities."

He said that he will definitely return if the tournament continues next year.

IOC president Rogge launches table tennis meeting

GENEVE, June 27 (Xinhua) -- IOC President Jacques Rogge opened an almost eight hours session of the ITTF Executive Committee meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday and expressed his satisfaction of table tennis in the Olympics.

According to the news letter released by the table tennis' world governing body early Saturday, the EC meeting at the IOC headquarter made decisions about its own TV channel, the racket control system, the next World Championships and about the eligibility of players from Hong Kong.

At the 2009 World Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama, Japan, the TV viewership has doubled compared to the same event in 2007, said the report.

In China more than 227 million different people have watched at least one minute of table tennis from Japan although the competitions were also broadcasted online on itTV, it added.

The EC decided that all ITTF events will now be on the ITTF's own itTV channel, as President Adham Sharara explained that more than 800,000 unique viewers followed the matches from Yokohama on itTV.

Starting on 1st September the racket testing will be stricter. The tolerance for VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) will be lowered to 4ppm (parts per million).

President Sharara also announced news about the case between the manufacturer of the rubber named

Table Tennis Masters and ITTF. "The ITTF is very happy that this matter has been settled out of court," Sharara said.

The EC furthermore decided that players for Hong Kong of Chinese nationality are treated like players of an association within the United Kingdom.

If a player wants to change the association for ITTF events, the waiting period of three, five and seven years respectively (depending on the age of player) is still compulsory; however, no special passport of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong is required as long as a Chinese player lives in Hong Kong.

Li: Chinese players will never give up

LONDON: Li Na praised Chinese players's fighting spirit as key to their assault on the world tennis scene.

The Chinese No 2 showed plenty of fighting spirit during her run at Wimbledon, as did her compatriots.

Though the 19th seed lost in the third round, she saved several match points along the way and battled to the very end.

Li's compatriot Peng Shuai also fought a thrilling match as she went out in the second round, salvaging several match points to keep the game alive.

"The Chinese always don't want to give up easily," Li told AFP. "The Chinese are always fighting every point. You can see it in all the players, it doesn't matter whether it's tennis or another sport - they never give up."

But don't just take it from her.

Polish 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska had to play Li and Peng - and was given a tough time by both.

She beat Li 6-4, 7-5 in the third round after beating world No 36 Peng 6-2, 6-7 (7/6), 9-7 in the second round, in a match where Peng had looked well beaten at a set and 5-2 down.

"She's very good player, so I didn't expect it was going to be easy," said Radwanska.

"I knew that it was going to be tough match, especially against the Chinese it is always very difficult. So I'm very happy I finished in two sets.

"They're all very good. It's always very tough to play against them. They're so consistent, and you have to play 100 percent to win the match.

"It was actually very similar compared to the last match also, a couple of match points and I didn't use them.

"But she was playing unbelievable at that time. When I had match points, I didn't do anything to push the last point. But she was playing very good also in the end."

Chinese interest in the singles competitions is now over for the year, leaving Li reflecting on this year's Wimbledon.

"This year was very different to last year," she said.

"The court was much slower, much like a clay court. Before you could always see around the service line there was no grass any more after the second round. But right now it is still green."

Test finds age cheats in youth table tennis event, report

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- About one third of the players in a national youth table tennis competition were found lying about their age, a report said on Thursday.

The national table tennis association has decided to disqualify 28 players after the bone age tests found them lying about their ages in this year's national youth table tennis qualifying rounds starting on Monday, Yangcheng Evening reported.

The newspaper said there were 90 players failing to pass the tests among 259 who received the tests, but did not go further to explain why not all the violators were punished.

The association also banned two teams from competing in the teams' event as each team had more than two players cheating about their ages.

The association requested all teams to give detailed birth date of each player in their applications for the national youth table tennis championships next month.

"The players will again be tested according to the revised information," the association said.

Middle blocker Xue Ming scored 16 points including seven stuffs to lead the Beijing Olympic bronze medallists to the 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17 victory.

"We play better than we did in the first match against Dominican Republic," said Cai Bin, who took the helm of the Chinese national team in March.

"In the first match, our players were anxious to play well, but they couldn't. This time they are able to display what they can do in training."

Wang Yimei, who changed her position from outside hitter to opposite under the guidance of Cai, improved on her play in the first match to contribute 11 points for China.

"She didn't play to her standard in the first match, but today she played much better, showing good fighting spirit," said the 42-year-old Cai, who had coached the Chinese national youth team from 2002 to 2008.

Libero Zhang Xian added 10 excellent digs to the solid Chinese defense, which turned out to be too much for the light Turkish attack.

Earlier on Saturday, Cuba also collected its second victory in two days by beating Dominican Republic 25-12, 17-25, 25-21 and 25- 14, setting up an actual title clash with China on Sunday.

"We know Cuba is a very strong team, we will just play the best we can," Cai said.

LUOHE, Henan Province, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Beijing Olympic bronze medallist China trounced traditional powerhouse Cuba 25-17, 25-21 and 25-15 to win the 2009 China International Women's Volleyball Tournament here on Sunday.

The Chinese women were crowned in their first competition under the guidance of Cai Bin, who took the helm of the national team in March, with three straight wins in the four-team round robin tournament.

"I am very happy that our team is in good rhythm and spirit. Hopefully we can keep improving," said the 42-year-old Cai, former head coach of the Chinese national youth team.

"Despite the victory, I think we should keep working on our receiving and combination," he added.

Xue Ming, the 1.93-meter star blocker, led Chinese scorers for the third game in a row after notching 14 points while Wang Yimei, who changed her position from outside hitter to opposite, added 13 points.

"Wang played better and better in her new position, and I will stick to the tactic of making

her faster in attack," Cai said.

With the retirement of Yumilka Ruiz, Zoila Barros, Daimi Ramirez, the young Cuban team found it hard to tear open the solid defense led by Xue Ming and the 1.89-meter Ma Yunwen with Giselle Silva emerging as its top scorer with just eight points.

The only opportunity for Cuba came in the second set when it overtook the lead with a 14-5 run to make it 18-15. However, the Chinese women went ahead again with an 8-1 surge thanks to consecutive Cuban errors.

China reaped a total of 25 points from Cuba's mistakes in the 66- minute match.

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian men's volleyball team beat Poland in three sets on Sunday at Sao Paulo in their second match in the World League of volleyball.

Even with some of the minor changes, we were able to keep up the quality of our game. We played much better today than we did yesterday," commented the team's captain, Murilo.

One of the factors that helped Brazil to victory was the European style of play. Using taller players at the net as well as taller athletes serving the ball, Brazil was able to achieve their second victory in the World League.

BELGRADE, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazil, Serbia, Cuba and Russia made the semifinals of the 2009 FIVB World League after the conclusion of pool play on Friday.

Seven-time title-holder Brazil overpowered Argentina 3-0 to win Pool F while the host Serbia battled past Russia 3-1 for the top place in Pool E.

With the 25-20, 25-22 and 25-20 victory over the Argentines, the Brazilians improved to a 2-0 win-loss record and set up a semifinal clash with Russia, who finished second to Serbia in Pool E.

"It is good to be in the Top 4 again with a new team, new setter, new blocker. It is good for us to see the team playing at a high level," said Brazil head coach Bernardo Rezende. "We hope to continue playing well and we'll see what happens tomorrow."

Giba and Neves Vissoto notched 11 points each for Brazil with Endres Murilo adding 10.

Going down tamely in the first set, Argentina put up real resistance in the second where the two sides traded leads several times before tying it at 21-all.

However, a serving mistake followed by a spiking error of Lucas Chavez allowed Brazil a two-point advantage. Nicolas Uriarte, Rodrigo Quiroga and Alejandro Spajic teamed up to stuff Endres Murilo to pull Argentina within 23-22, but Murilo came back with a fine shot to give Brazil the set point before Guillermo Garcia drove a ball long to surrender the set.

In the third set, Brazil pulled away from a 9-8 lead on back of a 6-1 run and held on for the victory.

Later on Friday, Serbia beat Russia 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-21 in front of over 12,000 home fans.

"I have to say Serbia played tonight with all its heart and soul. And a very important factor was wonderfully audience in arena, the crowd raised us," said Serbia head coach Igor Kolakovic.

"I am very pleased how we played towards the end of each set, we didn't quit at any point."

It was a hotly contested match from the very beginning while Russia managed to hold an narrow lead until Serbia staged an 8-3 run capped by two Russian errors to go up at 22-20.

Russia pulled within 23-22, but Ivan Miljkovic came up with a couple of strikes from the side to clinch the opener for Serbia and set the tone for the match.

"I'm disappointed, we could have won this match 3-0," said Russia head coach Daniele Bagnoli, "We played well until one point in the set, and towards the end of the set we lose easy points."

Miljkovic had 15 kills in 36 attempts to score 17 points and Milos Nikic added 14 points for Serbia, who will meet Cuba in Saturday's semifinals.

The Russian side was led by Maxim Mikhaylov with 19 points.

Brazil ties record with eighth World League title

BELGRADE, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Olympic runners-up Brazil outlasted Serbia 3-2 here on Sunday for their eighth FIVB World League title.

With the 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-12 victory, the Brazilians tied the record of the Italians, who have also been crowned for eight times in the annual volleyball tournament founded in 1990.

"It's a lot of joy. For us it is good to come up here and win, since we didn't play so well in Brazil and lost the title last year, " said Brazil head coach Bernardo Rezende.

"I think that this generation still make a lots of mistakes. I hope they will learn from this competition and we will keep working and try to keep being competitive, that's our goal for this cycle."

In the tiebreaker, Brazil overcame an early 6-3 deficit to go up 12-9, thanks to Endres Murilo's storming serving which lifted his team to a decisive 4-0 run. Ivan Miljkovic pulled Serbia within 14-12, only to find Giba drive a ball off the block out of bounds to seal the victory in the marathon match.

"We are very sad for not winning in front of this wonderful crowd and because we didn't bring joy to the whole nation," said Serbia head coach Igor Kolakovic. "During the fifth set, it seemed like we could win this match, but they played even better and defended a lot of hard balls."

Neves Vissoto notched up game-high 29 points for Brazil with Murilo and Saatkamp Lucas adding 15 apiece.

Serbia started well in front of a full-capacity home crowd of 22, 600, jumping to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, while Brazil immediately answered with three straight points to tie it at 5-all.

Then it was hotly contested until Serbia used a 4-1 run capped by a Miljkovic ace to go up 22-19 and held on to clinch the opener.

Miljkovic, who scored nine points in the first set, continued to strike hard from the sides to lead Serbia overcome a 14-11 deficit to overtake the lead at 15-14. Brazil finally found the way to stop Miljkovic as Giba and Sidao combined to stuff him for a 20-19 advantage.

After another solid block of Lucas and Rezende Bruno against Bojan Janic pushed Brazil up to 24-22, Janic came back to make it 24-23, only to find Vissoto snare the set for Brazil with a smash.

Brazil continued to play excellent defense and blocking early in the third set for an amazing 16-8 lead. Serbia steadily pulled within 24-22 when Giba tore open the defense of two blockers to land the set winner.

It was tied at 21-all in the fourth set when the referee changed his original judgment after watching screen replay to award a controversial point to Brazil, but Serbia ran off four of the last five points to force the tie-breaker.

Miljkovic finished with 28 points for Serbia, who settled for the silver medal for the second year in a row.

Earlier on Sunday, Russia clean swept Cuba for the bronze.

Eddie Jordan becomes 76er coach

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The Philadelphia 76ers introduced Eddie Jordan on Monday as their new coach following their failed NBA playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

Jordan signed a three-year contract with the 76ers to become the third coach of the team since the start of last season.

Jordan was fired by Washington in November and is 230-288 in coaching stints with the Wizards and Sacramento Kings.

Led by a nucleus of Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young, the Sixers have made the playoffs two straight seasons and were knocked out in the first round each time. Star point guard Andre Miller is an unrestricted free agent.

Jordan said former Wizards assistant Mike O'Koren and Sixers assistant Aaron McKie will likely join him on staff.

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Australian Olympian Patty Mills Monday said he would give up the last two years of college in order to keep his name in the NBA draft.

The Saint Mary's College point guard even campaigned for the Warriors to select him on draft day June 25 so he can stay in the Bay Area.

Mills scored 20 points in the Beijing Olympic quarterfinals against the gold medal-winning U.S. team full of NBA stars. He also had three assists, two steals and no turnovers.

Mills averaged 18.7 points, 4.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals during his sophomore season at Saint Mary's after he made a name for himself in the United States with his standout freshman season and college appearances with Saint Mary's College.

Magic mull possible return of Nelson for finals

ORLANDO, Fla. 鈥?Jameer Nelson wants to play in the NBA finals. Whether the Orlando Magic will let him remains a mystery.

Nelson said Monday that he has been playing full-court games, participating in contact drills and practicing with the Magic for the first time since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder Feb. 3.

The All-Star guard had what was then called season-ending surgery Feb. 19. His rehabilitation was supposed to take at least another two months.

Magic general manager Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy still expressed doubt Monday whether Nelson could seriously return for the finals. Smith said a quicker recovery and the chance of winning a championship has forced him to at least take a look at Nelson. Game 1 is Thursday night in Los Angeles.

"It's still no in my mind," Smith said, adding that the team will explore the idea even if Nelson doesn't return for Game 1.

Orlando was 2-0 this against the Lakers this season. Nelson was the Orlando's leading scorer in both those games, averaging 27.5 points. He has been lobbying the Magic for a chance at playing since the playoffs began, with each round the team advances the idea 鈥?and the talk 鈥?of him returning growing.

But even Nelson admits it will be difficult to convince the training staff and coaches that he isn't risking future damage.

"A miracle has to happen," Nelson said.

The Magic had the best record in the NBA in January behind Nelson, who was having a career season. He averaged 16.7 points, 5.4 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 42 games this season.

But their title hopes took a major hit after he was injured. A trade-deadline deal that brought Rafer Alston from Houston largely saved the Magic's season, allowing the rotation to remain the same and Anthony Johnson to continue to provide solid play as Alston's backup.

LeBron James has benign growth removed from jaw

Cavaliers star LeBron James had a benign growth removed from his right jaw during a five-hour procedure at the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday.

James has had the condition for several months, but with permission from his treating doctors, he and his family decided to put off the operation until the Cavs completed their season. Cleveland was eliminated from the NBA playoffs on Saturday by Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals.

During the operation, Dr. Frank Papay removed tissue from the parotid gland, which produces saliva. Surgery for such conditions often takes time because of the numerous nerves and blood vessels in that area of the jaw.

The Cavaliers released a statement saying doctors were "pleased with the outcome of the procedure, and at this time, are confident that no further treatment will be needed as LeBron is expected to make a full and complete recovery."

James remains hospitalized and the team said he will soon be returning home.

The 24-year-old James was the league MVP this season after leading the Cavs to 66 regular-seasons wins and their second Central Division title. He averaged 38.5 points, 8.3 assists and 8.0 rebounds in Cleveland's series against the Magic, who won in six games.

James caused a minor controversy after Game 6 for not shaking hands with Orlando's players and skipping the postgame news conference.

Magic players: PG Nelson will play in NBA finals

ORLANDO, Fla. 鈥?Orlando Magic players say Jameer Nelson will play in the NBA finals, even though the All-Star point guard and his coach remain publicly pessimistic.

Nelson participated in a full team practice Tuesday for the first time since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder Feb. 2. While Nelson and coach Stan Van Gundy still said the point guard's status won't be determined until game day, players said Nelson looked "terrific" and expect him to be on the court against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I expect to see him out there at some point in the series," backup point guard Anthony Johnson said.

Nelson had what was then called season-ending surgery Feb. 19. Nelson's rehabilitation was supposed to take at least another two months.

Game 1 of the finals is Thursday night in Los Angeles, and healed or not, Nelson wants to play.

"I'm not saying I'm any tougher or stronger than anybody, but I've been known to do some amazing things sometimes," Nelson said Tuesday, again lobbying for playing time.

Magic general manager Otis Smith had repeatedly said Nelson will not play again this season. But he recanted his comments Monday and said a quicker recovery and the chance of winning a championship has forced him to at least take a look at Nelson

"It's still no in my mind," Smith said. "There's a very smidgen of a chance he can play."

That "smidgen" seems to be growing.

Nelson has been playing full-court games and practicing in non-contact drills for the last two weeks. Tuesday, he participated in every drill.

Players said Nelson wasn't in his All-Star form, but even not completely healthy, he was better than most NBA point guards.

"He was terrific," Magic forward Mickael Pietrus said. "Hopefully, he will play and can help us win."

Starting point guard Rafer Alston expressed similar optimism.

"I was going to try to run him ragged out there, but I didn't want to cross him over," Alston said. "He did cross me over a couple times."

The Lakers are preparing as if Nelson will play 鈥?and for good reason.

Orlando was 2-0 against Los Angeles this season. Nelson was Orlando's leading scorer in both those games, averaging 27.5 points.

And with the Lakers' troubles guarding point guards in the postseason, they're not taking any chances.

"He's a terrific player. He's really come on a lot in the last year as a player," Lakers coach Phil Jackson. "Someone's got to play that position and we have to match whatever happens there. He has the speed and intelligence to play that position very well for that team."

Nelson has been trying to convince the Magic for a chance at playing since the playoffs began, with each round the team advances the idea 鈥?and the talk 鈥?of him returning growing.

For the Lakers, Nelson is just one more offensive weapon they have to worry about.

"They add another scorer," Los Angeles' Kobe Bryant said. "They have a team full of them, but he is another player you're going to have to deal with on defense."

The Magic's title hopes seemingly took a major hit after Nelson was injured. A trade-deadline deal that brought Alston from Houston largely saved the Magic's season, allowing the rotation to remain the same and Johnson to continue to provide solid play as Alston's backup.

The Magic are hoping Nelson can only add to that success.

Van Gundy, perhaps trying to keep his coaching strategy a secret, again expressed doubt Tuesday whether Nelson could seriously return for the finals. But he also said that even if Nelson doesn't play in Game 1, he could play later in the series.

"He was OK," Van Gundy said, shrugging his shoulders. "We'll have to wait until and see."

U.S. lawmaker urges NBA to stop age limit

WASHINGTON, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday, a day after having a benign growth removed from his jaw.

The NBA MVP received a five-hour surgery Tuesday and his team said James returned home and was recovering well.

James has had the condition for several months but decided not to have surgery until the team's season was complete following their elimination from in the Eastern Conference finals of the NBA playoffs by Orlando Magic.

LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- As the NBA finals begin Thursday at Staples Center, Los Angeles, many experts, fans and even President Barack Obama predicted that the Los Angeles Lakers will defeat the Orlando Magic to win their first championship since 2002.

In view of various factors, 59 percent of the more than 365,000 participants in an unscientific poll on ESPN.com predicted a Laker victory.

Oddsmakers have set the Lakers as a 6-to-6 1/2 point favorite and to win the best-of-seven series, despite losing both regular-season games to Orlando.

"The Lakers have a lot more talent than anybody in the NBA and are extremely well coached," ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy said on a conference call earlier this week. "They have the best 1-2 punch in the league in (Kobe) Bryant and (Pau) Gasol, and yet I think it will be very hard-fought.

"I think Orlando is a resilient, tough-minded, well-prepared team that can pose some problems for teams, but I think the Lakers in the end have the better talent."

Fellow ABC analyst Mark Jackson agreed with Van Gundy about the Lakers being the favorite, but said if Orlando is successful in making 3-point shots, "they're basically a totally different team and capable of beating anybody."

The Magic made 62 3-point baskets as it upset the Cleveland Cavaliers four games to two in the Eastern Conference finals and have made an average of 8.6 per game throughout the playoffs.

Factors in the Lakers' favor include the home-court advantage, a better regular-season record and more experience in the finals. The Lakers are making their second consecutive finals appearance, while Orlando is making its first since 1995.

In response to a shouted question from a reporter for a prediction as he walked to the Marine One helicopter on the White House's South Lawn Tuesday, a smiling Obama said, "Lakers in six, I think."

Obama has a record of successfully predicting basketball champions, including North Carolina's victory in this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament.

"I agree with the president in terms of his feelings about the Lakers winning the series, (but I'm) not willing to predict how many games it will take," Lakers guard Derek Fisher told CBS2. "I've always felt like he was a smart man."

Lakers routs Orlando Magic in NBA finals opener

LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 100-75 in Game 1 of the NBA finals on Thursday at Los Angeles Staples Center, with Kobe Bryant catching the spotlight.

Bryant scored a career finals-record 40 points, 36 over the first three quarters, while Pau Gasol added 16, putting the Lakers at a 9-5 record in the finals.

Mickael Pietrus led Orlando with 14, while Hedo Turkoglu added 13 and Dwight Howard 12, missing five of six shots.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series will be played Sunday at Staples Center.

The Lakers made 41 of 89 shots, 46.1 percent, while the Magic made 23 of 77, 29.9 percent.

After trailing 24-22 at the end of the first quarter and trailing by five points three times in the second quarter, Los Angeles took control of the game by scoring 10 consecutive points over a three minute, four second span midway through the second quarter, taking a 38-33 lead 5:22 before halftime. The streak began with Luke Walton making back-to-back baskets, with Bryant scoring the final six points.

An 8-2 run late in the half gave the Lakers a 51-41 lead. They led 53-43 at the end of the first half, with Bryant scoring 18 points.

Los Angeles ended all doubt about the game's outcome in the third quarter, outscoring the Magic, 29-15, with Bryant scoring 18 points, making six of 11 shots and all six of his free throws.

Orlando pulled with nine, 59-50, on Courtney Lee's 3-point basket with 8:20 left in the quarter, but the Lakers scored the next nine points. After Rafer Alston ended that streak by making two free throws, Bryant scored the next seven points, putting the Lakers ahead, 75-52. Bryant's previous finals high was 36.

The customary capacity crowd of 18,997 included actors Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, California first lady Maria Shriver, legendary tennis champion Billie Jean King and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Teams that have won the opening game of a best-of-seven series have won the series 308 of 392 times, 78.6 percent.

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Lakers produced a dazzling display at both ends of the floor to crush the Orlando Magic 100-75 in the opening game of the NBA Finals on Thursday.

Kobe Bryant scored 40 points and had eight assists and eight rebounds to lift the Lakers, seeking their first title since 2002 when they had Shaquille O'Neal safeguarding the paint.

Bryant, the 2008 league MVP, scored 18 points in the third quarter when the Lakers expanded a 10-point halftime lead to 82-58 with a quarter to play.

The 30-year-old, 11 times All-Star guard connected on 16 of 34 shots while scoring his career high in the NBA Finals.

"I told these guys it doesn't matter whether we win by 60 or six in this game," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. "It's just one win. We've got to try to go out and establish that again on our home court on Sunday."

Los Angeles shot 46 percent from the floor but it was their suffocating defense that was responsible for the dominating win.

SUPERMAN STIFLED

The Lakers limited All-Star center Dwight Howard to 12 points, on just one of six shooting.

Howard, who was double and triple-teamed at every opportunity, entered the game averaging 21.7 points in the post-season.

"Things just didn't go right for them tonight," said Jackson. "They didn't get things in rhythm and they didn't get things in the paint that they normally get, and those situations change the complexity of the game.

"The first half was nip and tuck right up until the end of the second quarter. We were able to come out and play with a different type of an attitude the second half."

The Magic stopped LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals by consistently hitting outside shot but their bombers were silenced by the Lakers' pressure defense.

Orlando shot just 29.9 percent from the floor, including eight of 23 from beyond the arc, and were outrebounded 55-41.

NBA fines MVP James for skipping news conference

WASHINGTON, June 4 (Xinhua) -- NBA commissioner David Stern handed the MVP and Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James 25,000-U.S.-dollar fine on Thursday after he failed to attend a news conference.

James skipped the postgame news conference after his team lost to Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals.

The league first said James wouldn't be penalized, citing his usual cooperation with the press. Stern said he later found it inappropriate.

James was just released from the hospital Wednesday after he had a five-hour surgery to remove a benign growth new his jaw.

Former NBA All-Star guard Randy Smith dies at 60

WASHINGTON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Former All-Star guard Randy Smith died, aged 60, from a heart attack, the Los Angeles Clippers said on Friday on its website.

Smith was working out on a treadmill when he apparently had this heart attack.

A good shooter and superb jumper, he played seven seasons in the 1970s for the Buffalo Braves, the initial incarnation of the Clippers franchise.

Widely regarded as the league's fastest player while in his prime, Smith set an NBA record by playing in 906 consecutive games from 1972-83.

A highlight of his career was the 1978 NBA All-Star Game where he was named the Most Valuable Player after coming off the bench to lead all scorers with 27 points.

Smith went on to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks before retiring in 1983 with a career record of 16,262 points at 16.7 per game.

NBA All-Star game coming to Los Angeles in 2011

LOS ANGELES, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The National Basketball Association All-Star game will be played at Los Angeles Staples Center in 2011, it was reported Saturday night.

NBA Commissioner David Stern is expected to make the formal announcement Sunday afternoon before the Los Angeles Lakers-Orlando Magic game at Staples Center, the Los Angeles Times reported.

AEG President Tim Leiweke and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are expected to be present.

The game was last played in Los Angeles in 2004.

The 58th All-Star game was played in Phoenix this year, and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal shared most-valuable-player honors. The game will be played in Dallas next year at the Cowboys' new stadium.

O'Neal was the game's MVP when it was held in Los Angeles in 2004. He had 24 points in 24 minutes as the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference, 136-132.

Los Angeles to host 2011 NBA All-Star game

LOS ANGELES, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The 2011 NBA All-Star game will be played at Los Angeles Staples Center, bringing an estimated 100 million dollars in revenue to the city, it was announced on Sunday.

National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern made the official announcement this afternoon at the stadium, shortly before game 2 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic.

The 60th NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, and will be preceded by the

Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam Feb. 18, and the Shooting Stars, Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout and Slam Dunk Contest Feb. 19.

The festivities are expected to generate an economic impact of 100 million dollars for the city, according to the Mayor's Office.

"There is no better place to host the action and drama of the NBA All-Star Game than on the stage of so many award winning performances," said

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was also at the announcement.

"On behalf of the city Los Angeles, we look forward to welcoming NBA fans and players from across the country and around the globe to the entertainment capital of the world," he said.

NBA All-Star Jam Session, an interactive basketball celebration, will return to the Los Angeles Convention Center with additional events and programming set to take place across the street from Staples Center within the new L.A. Live sports, residential and entertainment district.

The 2011 All-Star Game will be the fifth played in the Los Angeles area. The 1963 game was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the 1972 and 1983 games at the Forum in Inglewood and the 2004 game at Staples Center.

The 2010 game will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

In the 2004 game, the Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant combined for 44 points as the West edged the East 136-132. O'Neal earned MVP honors with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

In the 1972 game, Lakers' star Jerry West made the winning shot, a last- second jumper that gave the West a 112-110 victory and netted him MVP honors.

Lakers hang on for 101-96 win in Game 2

LOS ANGELES 鈥?Lucky to have a second chance, the Los Angeles Lakers grabbed it.

Kobe Bryant and Co. held on and are in control of the NBA finals 鈥?just barely.

Orlando rookie Courtney Lee missed a potential winning layup as regulation ended, giving Los Angeles another shot it didn't waste. Pau Gasol scored seven points in overtime as the Lakers, so dominant in the series opener, survived with a 101-96 win over the Magic in Game 2 on Sunday night.

"There is a sense of relief because they played very well," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "There's no doubt they had every opportunity or chance to win."

If Orlando doesn't come back and win this series, Lee's miss may go down as one of the biggest gaffes in finals history. He had a chance to give the Magic its first finals win.

"We missed it. I don't know what else to say," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We executed well, Hedo (Turkoglu) made a great pass. I'm not trying to be a pain ... Hedo made a great pass and he just missed it."

Orlando may not get a better shot to beat the Lakers.

"We blew a lot of assignments tonight 鈥?a lot of assignments 鈥?and we still managed to get a win," Bryant said.

When it was finally over, Derek Fisher and the Lakers jogged to the locker room, smiling and high-fiving fans along the way.

Turkoglu trudged through the tunnel dejected, a towel hanging from his head.

Bryant scored 29 points, Gasol added 24 and 10 rebounds and Lamar Odom 19 points for the Lakers, who won Game 1 by 25 but needed 53 minutes to put away the Magic.

Rashard Lewis scored 34 鈥?18 in the second quarter alone 鈥?and Dwight Howard had 17 points and 16 rebounds for Orlando.

Game 3 is Tuesday night at Orlando's Amway Arena, which will be hosting a finals game for the first time since June 9, 1995.

With the score tied at 88-88 in regulation, Lee missed the first of two late-game shots when he drove the lane and missed a contested layup with 10.5 seconds remaining.

The Lakers called time with 9.1 seconds to play, and after Odom caught the inbounds pass, he quickly gave it to Bryant, who drove into a crowd. Bryant attempted an off-balance 12-footer, but his shot was blocked from behind by Turkoglu with 1.8 seconds left.

The horn sounded, the clock expired to zeros and Jack Nicholson and the star-studded Staples Center crowd braced for overtime.

But the officials huddled at the scorer's table and decided to put 0.6 seconds back on the clock because Turkoglu grabbed the ball and called timeout.

Turkoglu couldn't find anyone open on the inbounds and was forced to call another timeout. On the Magic's second attempt, Lee got free on a perfectly executed play and caught Turkoglu's long lob pass as he neared the left side of the basket. But with 7-foot Gasol closing in on him, Lee's shot caromed off the backboard and front of the rim.

Howard dunked in the miss as Lee put his hands behind his head in disbelief and began a long walk back to the bench as his teammates tried to console him.

So close. So far.

Fourteen years to the day after the Magic let Game 1 of the 1995 finals against Houston get away when Orlando's Nick Anderson missed four late free throws, Lee provided another excruciating moment for the franchise.

The Magic, who looked more relaxed than in the opener, will head home thinking about what might have been. They could be tied 1-1, and with the next three games scheduled in front of their frenzied fans, they could have denied Bryant and the Lakers a 15th title.

Now, in a season of comebacks, they'll need their biggest one.

Bryant, who scored 40 in the opener, finished with eight assists and seven turnovers.

Lewis transformed into Orlando's version of Bryant in the second quarter, scoring 18 of the Magic's 20 points to keep them close. The 6-foot-10 forward's size and exceptional range make him an impossible cover, and the Lakers had no answer to stop him.

With Howard unable to get open and Orlando's other shooters still searching for their touch, Lewis carried the scoring load. He made four consecutive 3-pointers to end the half and the Magic, despite shooting just 32 percent, were within 38-35 at the break.

If not for Lewis, Orlando would have been in big trouble because Howard was hopeless.

For a long stretch, Superman was more like The Invisible Man.

At times, it seemed as if there were six or seven Lakers on the floor as they swarmed Howard, who made just 1 of 4 shots and had four turnovers.

Before the game, Jackson predicted that Game 2 would follow a different script than the series' Hollywood premiere.

"This game is not going to be like the last game," said the nine-time NBA champion. "It probably won't resemble the last game at all except the players that are on the floor."

He was so right.

Lakers heads to Orlando, hoping for NBA championship

LOS ANGELES, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles Lakers flew to Orlando on Monday, hoping to get NBA championship if it can win two more matches against the Orlando Magic.

The Lakers took a two games to none lead in the NBA finals Sunday, with a 101-96 overtime victory over the Orlando Magic. Game 3 of the best- of-seven series will be played Tuesday in Orlando.

"They're going to be fighting for their lives," Laker center Andrew Bynum said of the Magic. "We have to be ready because I think everybody is going to be hitting the floor."

The 2-0 lead "feels great", but the Lakers "have to be extra focused and defensive-minded going into the next game," Bynum said.

Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said he expects "a wide open game".

"It's going to be a much more free-flowing game," said Jackson, who is two victories away from his 10th NBA championship as a coach, which would break the record he currently shares with the late Red Auerbach.

This is the 31st time a team has taken a 2-0 lead in the NBA finals. Only three teams have overcome a 2-0 deficit to win a title -- the 1969 Boston Celtics, 1977 Portland Trail Blazers and 2006 Miami Heat.

Magic defeats Lakers 108-104 in NBA Finals Game 3

ORLANDO, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Orlando Magic was still in the war after beating the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals Game Three 108-104 on Tuesday, cutting the deficit in their best-of-seven series to 2-1.

Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis each scored 21 points to lead the Magic while Lakers guard Kobe Bryant came out on fire with 17 points in the opening quarter and ended with 31 points.

Game Four of the series is on Thursday in Orlando.

ORLANDO, Fla. 鈥?Missing for two games, Orlando found its Magic touch.

Making easy shots and tough ones from everywhere, the Magic won their first game in two visits to the NBA finals as Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis scored 21 points apiece in a 108-104 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 on Tuesday night to pull within 2-1.

Orlando shot a finals record 63 percent 鈥?including another record 75 percent in the first half 鈥?to snap a six-game finals losing streak and avoid falling into an 0-3 hole that 88 previous teams in postseason history have been unable to escape.

"Well, it was going in the basket. That always works," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That formula's always tried and true."

Kobe Bryant, seeking a fourth title and his first since 2002, scored 31 points for the Lakers but the superstar had just 10 points in the second half and went only 4 of 15 from the field after the first quarter. He also missed five free throws, points that could have given the Lakers that 3-0 lead.

Game 4 is Thursday night, and Game 5 鈥?now necessary 鈥?will be at Amway Arena on Sunday.

The Lakers, going for their 15th title and looking to redeem themselves for losing to Boston last season, have lost their stranglehold.

"This is a tough team, not a cupcake team," Bryant said. "Extremely well coached, execute well and we've got our work cut out."

With their season 48 minutes from all but disappearing, the Magic, hosting their first finals game since 1995, had five players score at least 18 points. Rafer Alston, who was just 3 of 17 from the field in the first two games, had 20 and Hedo Turkoglu and Mickael Pietrus 18 each.

"We've got to play like this," Howard said. "When guys are attacking we're tough to guard."

Pau Gasol scored 23 points but had just three rebounds and the Lakers were only 16 of 26 from the line.

For a while, it appeared the Magic, who shot just 36 percent while dropping Games 1 and 2 at Staples Center, couldn't or wouldn't miss.

From 20 feet, swish. From 10 feet, nothing but net. Layups, runners, banks, pull-ups, didn't matter. You name it, if it went up, more times than not it went in.

Orlando made 24 of 32 shots in the first half and only cooled off a little in the third quarter as they entered the fourth at a 65 percent clip and clinging to an 81-75 lead.

Bryant sat out the first 4:47 of the fourth, and when he finally subbed in, the Lakers were still down by five and unable to do anything to stop the Magic's marksmanship.

But then, Orlando began to misfire at the worst time possible.

After Pietrus was long with a wide-open 3, Gasol was fouled at the other end and made two free throws to make it 99 all with 2:41 remaining. Orlando's rowdy crowd, which waited 14 years for a chance to welcome the Larry O'Brien Trophy to town, grew nervous.

"Oh, boy," muttered one fan near the media section.

But Pietrus calmed fears by dunking in a rare miss to put the Magic up two, and when Lewis hit a jumper 鈥?it was originally called a 3 but replays showed his right foot was on the line 鈥?Orlando was up 104-101.

Howard was called for a questionable foul on a drive by Bryant, who then split his two free throws. When he went to the Lakers bench during a timeout that followed, Bryant hit himself in the head for letting two more valuable points slip away.

Orlando couldn't capitalize, though, and the Lakers got the ball back when Lewis missed a baseline jumper and the rebound went off him and out of bounds.

Bryant, who scored 17 in the first quarter and 21 by halftime, then maybe tried to do too much. He crossed over to get past Pietrus, but Howard, the league's defensive player of the year known mostly for his blocks underneath, made like a point guard and tipped the ball away. Pietrus was fouled and made both to make it 106-102.

The Lakers suddenly became desperate. Instead of working the ball into Gasol or Lamar Odom, they fired away from outside.

They couldn't shoot with the Magic.

Bryant missed a 3, Trevor Ariza misfired on one, Bryant clanged another and Derek Fisher was long as the Lakers went 0 for 4 on a possession where they had to have points. Bryant did score on a putback with .05 seconds left, but it was too late and although there was still time left, confetti began to fall to the court.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson felt Bryant looked tired down the stretch.

"We're all frail as humans," he said. "Sometimes not as much as others."

Orlando, which was swept by the Houston Rockets 14 years ago, could finally celebrate winning one on pro basketball's biggest stage.

Bryant fouled Lewis with .02 seconds to go, and as Magic fans hugged and danced at an outcome they longed for, he dropped two more to seal it.

The last time Orlando hosted a finals game, Howard was a 9-year-old kid in Atlanta and Shaquille O'Neal was the Magic's Superman.

Outside the cramped arena, which had a red Superman cape hanging off one wall, Orlando fans, one of them dressed as Jack Nicholson and carrying a sign that read: "Jack, You Can't Handle The Truth," gathered on the sidewalks hoping this would be a night their team could get back into the series.

They believed.

This was their magic night.

Kings hire Westphal as coach

BEIJING, June 11 -- The Sacramento Kings sealed an agreement in principle with Paul Westphal on Tuesday to be their fourth coach in just over three years.

Westphal, a longtime National Basketball Association player and coach, went 267-159 during parts of seven seasons leading the Phoenix Suns and Seattle SuperSonics. He replaces interim coach Kenny Natt after the Kings finished 17-65, the worst record in the NBA and in franchise history.

"We set some parameters at the start of this coaching search to look for a successful, experienced leader, and Paul certainly meets those qualifications," said Geoff Petrie, the Kings' top basketball executive. "He has a wealth of experience in the NBA as both a coach and player."

Westphal is Sacramento's latest attempt to replace Rick Adelman, who was fired by owners Joe and Gavin Maloof in 2006 after eight straight playoff appearances and winning seasons.

The Kings fired Eric Musselman in 2007 after one tumultuous season, and NBA coaching newcomer Reggie Theus barely made it into his second campaign before being fired last December. Natt wasn't retained after finishing up a miserable season with Sacramento, which even slipped to the No. 4 draft slot in last month's lottery.

Westphal's impressive NBA coaching record includes one trip to the finals with Phoenix, but he has spent just one season on an NBA bench since late 2000, as an assistant in Dallas in 2007-08.

Lakers concerned with Magic's shooting 'monster'

Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant listens during his off-day news conference at the NBA basketball finals Wednesday, June 10, 2009 in Orlando, Fla. The Lakers play the Orlando Magic in Game 4 Thursday. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

ORLANDO, Fla. 鈥?Kobe Bryant now understands how dangerous the Orlando Magic can be at home when they're dialed in and raining down jumpers and 3-pointers from every angle. He knows what can happen when Dwight Howard recognizes the double team and kicks the ball out to the Magic's dead-eyed sharpshooters.

Bryant has seen the Magic, who shot an NBA finals-record 62 percent from the field 鈥?75 percent in the first half 鈥?in their Game 3 win, turn into a diabolical creature.

"This team can stay hot for weeks. They can get hot and stay hot," Bryant said Wednesday. "When that happens, you're dealing with a monster."

Behold the Beast of the East.

The Magic, who looked overwhelmed in Game 1 in Los Angeles before dropping Game 2 in overtime, were clicking again during their 108-104 win in Game 3. It was Orlando's first finals win in franchise history and one the Magic absolutely had to have.

As they prepared for Thursday's Game 4, the Magic, trying to become the fourth team in history to overcome an 0-2 deficit in the finals, were feeling better about their chances.

"We've shown we can bounce back," guard Rafer Alston said. "It's crucial that we put Game 3 behind us and prepare for what's to come."

Orlando is ready for Bryant to bring everything he's got.

The NBA's pre-eminent closer, Bryant didn't get the job done in Game 3.

Normally, he owns the fourth quarter.

But with the Lakers eyeing a chance to open a 3-0 series lead and with a fourth title that he has obsessed about almost within his reach, Bryant slipped up.

With Tigers Woods, the sporting world's greatest finisher, sitting courtside, Bryant faltered.

The Magic saw it, too. They don't expect to see it again.

"We have to understand," Alston said. "He's not one to let it happen on back-to-back occasions."

Bryant and the Lakers have been bounced back before in the postseason. Pursuing a 15th NBA crown one year after losing to the Boston Celtics, they are 6-0 after a playoff loss. Bryant is usually the one who leads the charge.

After the Lakers lost Game 3 in the first round against Utah, Bryant followed with a 38-point outing. The Lakers lost Game 1 of the Western Conference finals to Houston and Bryant came back with 40 points in Game 2. When L.A. lost Game 2 of the Western Conference finals to Denver, Bryant responded with 41 in Game 3.

"I'm aware of me bouncing back after a tough loss," he said. "Hopefully we can do it again."

Bryant also dismissed talk that he is tired. He looked tired in the fourth quarter on Tuesday night, but insists it wasn't because he was fatigued.

Has he hit the wall?

"I didn't, but so what if I did?" he asked. "It means nothing. Because I'll run straight through it."

The Lakers aren't used to Kobe not being Kobe with the game on the line.

"Am I surprised?" center Pau Gasol said. "I guess you could say that because most of the time he is effective and does finish well. "That's why everybody talks about him being a clutch player, which he deserves and earned. The last game really didn't go that well, but we expect the next game to be a different story."

Following Games 1 and 2, it appeared this series matching one of the league's most famed franchises and a relative upstart would be a brief one. The Magic had made their way to their first finals since 1995 on the strength of Dwight Howard's inside game and superior outside shooting. But in L.A., Orlando was just O.K.

However, back on their home floor and in front of their frenzied fans, the Magic shot like no team in 360 previous finals games.

During one stretch in the opening half, Orlando made a remarkable 21 of 24 shots.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy had no explanation for his team's record-setting shooting spree. The Magic shot just 29.9 percent in Game 1 and 41.8 percent in Game 2.

"Our ball movement was good, but I don't care how good your ball movement is and the quality of shot you get," he said. "You're not going to put the ball in the basket at that rate very often. But it's one of those nights, thankfully, that a lot of shots went down."

As Van Gundy concluded his mandatory media interview session, a moderator announced that the Magic's practice would be open for 30 minutes.

"No practice," Van Gundy hollered as he left the dais. "But you can watch them shoot around."

As if they need the work.
