MADRID, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- New Real Madrid signing Xabi Alonso this Friday advised his companions to keep their feet on the ground ahead of the forthcoming football season.
Alonso, a 30 million Euro capture from Liverpool, is the last of the new signings to arrive at the club this summer.
The Spain international is seen by many as the man to hold the Madrid midfield together and to ensure that the star strikers Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema as well as Kaka get the support their attacking play requires.
His arrival has sent optimism soaring among Real Madrid fans, still smarting after having to watch bitter rivals FC Barcelona become the first Spanish side to win a domestic and European treble last year.
With the Champions League final to be held in Madrid next spring, there are high hopes of emulating the Catalans, but Alonso, whose father played for Barcelona, has warned against overconfidence.
"We can't allow ourselves to become obsessed by winning a treble," warned Alonso.
"We have to take it bit by bit, you win titles at the end of season and we have to make sure we have got a good foundation and try to get a good start in the competition."
"What we can't do is become obsessed whether win lift one, two or three or even no titles. What we need to do is to work hard and to make sure that we have a good group mentality," added the 27-year-old.
As a former Liverpool player, Alonso was a habitual rival of former Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo. Now the pair shares the same dressing room, he says they enjoy a cordial relationship.
"We have a very good relationship. He's a very friendly person and very normal. He's adapted very well to life here and he's getting to know everyone," said Alonso.
