RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The reigning world's best female soccer player, Marta, received a star's welcome on Thursday in her official presentation to the media and fans at Santos.
The player's acquisition came just weeks before the first-ever women's tournament of the Libertadores Cup.
The "Queen" was supposed to be introduced by the "King," Pele, however his appearance was compromised by a commercial shooting.
Marta was welcomed with fireworks, a red carpet and some 300 fans.
"After many fine performances from the Brazilian national soccer team as well as my individual accomplishments, women's soccer has grown a lot. We hope that it will grow even more with Santos' participation in the women's Libertadores Cup. I congratulate Santos and the team president Marcelo Teixeira. The girls are very grateful for the support you are showing," declared an emotional Marta.
"It is exciting to return to Brazil to play. I have always had this dream. We will all work hard to win the up-coming titles," added Marta.
Marta will wear the same number of Pele when he played at the club, No.10. Marta said that it is an honor to represent jersey No. 10 at Santos.
The Libertadores Cup will take place from Oct. 4 to 18. Later in the year, the Santos women's team will also participate in the female edition of the Brazilian Cup.
After the Brazilian Cup, Marta will return to the United States and her professional women's team, the Los Angeles Sol.
