MADRID, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Club Bilbao has completed the signing of Liverpool defender Mikel San Jose.
The 20-year-old central defender, who moved to Liverpool from the Basque club two seasons ago after progressing through the youth system, has signed a one-year loan deal with Athletic.
However, Athletic has the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season at a price of between 1.5 and 3 million euros.
San Jose's return to Athletic solves a problem for coach Joaquin Caparros, who has spoken all summer of the need to strengthen his club's defense.
Athletic had previously failed in a bid to buy Osasuna stopper Miguel Flano.
An under-19 European champion with Spain, San Jose had not been able to break into the Liverpool first team, although he did play for them this summer in friendly matches against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.
