LONDON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Last season's runners-up Liverpool could not avoid the second defeat in their first three Premier League matches here on Monday as the visitors Aston Villa played a tough defensive game with lucky goals.
The Reds dominated the field but failed to destroy Villa's defense. Then they found it was much easier to shoot in their own net as Leiva Lucas headed Ashley Young's free-kick into his team's goalmouth in the 34th minute.
The hosts were so eager to make amends that they leaving more space for Villa to strike counterattacks. On the stroke of half-time, Curtis Davies headed in Nicky Shorey's corner to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Liverpool launched waves of attacks but couldn't make breakthrough until Fernando Torres steered in a close-range strike after 72 minutes. But the hope of catching up only remained for three minutes while Young slot in a penalty due to Steven Gerrard's foul on Nigel Reo-Coker.
Liverpool lost two Premier League games last season and now they could match it only after three games. They were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham Spurs in their opening game, then bounced back to sweep Stoke City 4-0 five days ago.
