Botafogo names Estevam Soares as new head coach

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- After firing Ney Franco on August 10 due to a sharp decline in productivity, Botafogo soccer club signed on Estevam Soares on Tuesday to lead the team for the rest of the year.

Soares was the head coach of Barueri up until now. After receiving the proposal, Soares negotiated his departure from the team in order to take over at Botafogo.

"I am thrilled to be a part of Botafogo. It is a great team with a long tradition. I want to help the group. It will be the first time that I am going to coach a team in Rio de Janeiro. I hope to achieve great results," said Soares, who is expected to be officially presented on August 12.

The 53 year-old coach began his career in 1992. He is known forhis great ability to bring small teams into the limelight, much like he did with Barueri over the past two years.

He has worked with teams such as Guarani, America-RN, CSA-AL, Ponte Preta, Nautico, Palmeiras, Sao Caetano, Coritiba, Portuguesa,Guaratingueta and the team from Saudi Arabia, Al Ittihad.
