Romario announces return to soccer

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Fulfilling the wishes of his late father, Romario announced on Wednesday that he would play for America in the second division of Brazilian soccer championships.

The second Brazilian soccer player to score 1,000 goals has decided to move from the marketing office of America to the field in hope of winning next year's state championship.

Romario, a member of Brazil's World Cup winning team for three times, announced that he is physically fit to return to the field.

"I am preparing myself physically for next year's state championship. I will play in some of the team's games and realize my father's dream of me playing for America," said the striker.

Romario is expected to use number 11 for the team, a number that has previously been retired in homage to him.

His return may not be based only on his father's wishes. The striker recently had a penthouse auctioned off due to debt on July28.

Romario's apartment was sold for an estimated 4 million U.S. dollars. It is the second time he has lost an apartment due to debt.

His return will guarantee a fixed income, helping his economic troubles.
