Chilean president praises soccer player Valdes' social value

SANTIAGO, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chilean president Michelle Bachelet stressed Tuesday the social work done by Francisco "Chamaco" Valdes, a local soccer outstanding figure who recently died.

During an official event, Bachelet said Valdes was a "humble person, who gained the people's love" and "till the last moment gave his efforts for the sport and youth."

Bachelet also mentioned the work Valdes did for children from some towns in the South Santiago to boost the sport.

"Few time ago we had lunch in La Moneda (Palace), since we have a project, which I like a lot, called Preventive Schools of Soccer, and Valdes was the coordinator of this project," Bachelet said.

"He expressed his great compromise and love in this work, because he worked with young people and children, to whom he taught that with soccer they can learn a lot of things in this life, despite the difficult conditions," Bachelet added.

Valdes died Monday noon at 66 years old from a heart attack. He was kept a vigil on Tuesday noon in the parrish of Nuestra Senora del Rosario, in the northwest sector of Santiago.

Valdes played the World Cups of England 1966 and Germany 1974 and scored 215 goals for Chile in a total at official matches.
