Atletico-PR remains 30-year unbeaten by Flamengo at home

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- In a game marred by rain and a soggy field, Flamengo and Atletico-PR battled on Sunday to as loppy 0-0 draw. The game keeps Atletico-PR's home field advantage against Flamengo alive.

Atletico-PR has remained its more than 30-year invincibility against Flamengo at home so far.

The 23,000-U.S. dollar incentive offered by Flamengo's administration in order to beat Atletico-PR did not work. With poor field condition, players from both sides continually slipped, committed multiple errors and could not produce a goal.

With the result, Flamengo now has 31 points and stands in 11th place. Atletico-PR is close behind with 29 points and 14th place.

In the next and 24th round of play in the Brazilian Championship, both teams will play on Sept. 12. Flamengo will host Sport while Atletico-PR will travel to play at Atletico-MG.

Mexico's 3-0 win over Costa Rica hailed

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's Sunday media cheered the national soccer team for their 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in the World Cup qualifier.

Excelsior called the game "the three G" for goal scorers Guillermo Franco, Giovani dos Santos and Andres Guardado, headlining the match "Una cosa rica" (a delicious thing).

"Mexico is close" headlined newspaper El Sol de Mexico, reporting that Mexico is now in third place in the qualifying tour. The top three will go through automatically.

Mexico City daily Milenio led with a photograph of dos Santos, praising him for a goal to two assists, in the Saprissa Stadium, in Costa Rica capital San Jose.

Reforma headlined the news "Se crece el tri" (the Tri keeps growing), a reference to the national teams nickname "El Tricolor"(the team with three colors). The newspaper's sports section Cancha, described the match as the Tri's best in the whole qualification competition.

S Africa hails Brazil's qualification for World Cup finals

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee South Africa (OC) congratulated Brazil for being the first South American country to qualify for the World Cup finals next year.

"You cannot host a World Cup without Brazil. The kings of football already wowed South Africa earlier this year when they won their third Confederations Cup title, and we look forward to seeing if they can repeat that performance and add a record sixth World Cup trophy to their name next year," said OC CEO Danny Jordaan.

Brazil, who are topping FIFA world ranking, crushed Argentina 3-1 on Saturday night to guarantee a top four finish in the Conmebol standings.

The top four teams qualify for the World Cup finals directly and the fifth placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the fourth placed team from North, Central America & Caribbean.

Brazil is the most successful football team of all time, having won five World Cups to date, and is the only country to have qualified for every FIFA World Cup.

"Brazil are the hosts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and it will be great to have them here so that we can formally hand over the baton to them on 12 July 2010," said Jordaan.

Chile seeks win over Brazil for World Cup berth

SANTIAGO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chile would try to beat soccer giant Brazil on Wednesday to fix a berth for next year's World Cupfinals, winger and Captain Jorge Valdivia told media on Sunday.

"We respect Brazil, but without fear of seeking a chance to score," said Valdivia, who plays for Al Ain, a team in the United Arab Emirates. "We are going to Brazil to play our opportunities."

Chile is in the second place in South America's qualifying competition for the World Cup due in South Africa in 2010. Brazil is leading the standings after the 15th round, guaranteeing a top four finish by upsetting Argentina 3-1 on Saturday night.

Brazil will play at home with Chile on Wednesday. Brazil will miss some of its top players Luis Fabiano, Kaka and Lucia, who have accumulated three yellow cards.

"I don't know if Brazil feels their absence because it has many more top players," Valdivia told media. "No doubt they will have to change their system a bit."

Valdivia said it was difficult to sleep after the Venezuela match, which was in Chile's Monumental Stadium.

Chile tied Venezuela 2-2 at home.

Kenya tumbles out of 2010 World Cup/African Cup race

By Richard Juma

NAIROBI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The 1-0 defeat by Mozambique in a 2010 World Cup/African Cup of Nations Group 2 qualifier on Sunday has virtually locked Kenya out of international football next year.

For Kenya, thirsting for a sixth African Cup of Nations appearance and first appearance at the World Cup, the door was firmly shut by the Mozambicans in Maputo.

Determined to emulate the world conquering athletes, who did the country proud at last month's 12 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, the Kenyan football squad proved no match to the Mozambicans who dictated the pace.

After appearing in the Cup of Nations finals five times in the past, Kenya has virtually kissed both the World Cup and Nations Cup goodbye.

The remaining return matches against Tunisia and Nigeria, slated for Oct. 10 and Nov. 14 respectively will be mere formalities.

At the end of Sunday's return match in Maputo, Kenya hitherto occupying the third spot in the Group 2 standings with three points, slipped to the bottom, trading places with Mozambique who climbed to third with four points.

Kenya's dream of beating Mozambique and booking tickets to the 2010 Nations Cup finals in Angola went up in smoke.

On Oct. 10, the East Africans will be in Tunisia for their return match against the North Africans, a team they have never beaten before.

And it鈥檚 worth noting that Tunisia piped Kenya 2-1 in the first leg match here in March. A month later, the Kenyans, also known as Harambee Stars, face Nigeria's Super Eagles in a return match here.

Like Tunisia, Kenya has never beaten Nigeria; at best Kenya drew with Nigeria in an international tie here a few years back.

In the first leg match in Abuja in June, Super eagles walloped Kenya 3-1. Ahead of last night's Group 2 qualifier return match between Nigeria and Tunisia in Nigeria, the latter were leading the group standings with seven points, followed by Nigeria with five.

It goes without saying Nigeria and Tunisia are the top contenders in the group for the World Cup slot, while Mozambique's pipping of Kenya saw them put a foot in the Nations Cup finals.

Soccer analysts Sunday here blamed the poor show on lack of a comprehensive soccer development program, feeder program, inconsistency and frequent change of coaches.

"When coach Antoine Hey took charge of the team at the end of March he found a winning team moulded by his predecessor, Francis Kimanzi, instead of retaining the winning squad and formation, he made changes and the results are there for all of us to see," said soccer analyst James Onyango.

Dumped out of the race for the 2010 topflight international soccer, Kenya can only hope to feature in the next Cup of Nations finals qualifiers in 2011.

And that will be and extremely long wait for soccer loving Kenyans, thanks to bagging three points in four matches.

Ghana qualify for 2010 World Cup finals

JOHANNESBURG 鈥?Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien scored as Ghana defeated Sudan 2-0 in Accra Sunday to become the first African qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari gave the 'Black Stars' an early lead and Essien added a second soon after half-time, unleashing a drive that flew into the net at the near post.

The result coupled with closest challengers Benin and Mali drawing 1-1 in Cotonou a few hours earlier left a Ghana side boasting a 100 percent record with an unassailable seven-point Group D advantage.

"It was so important to win, regardless of how we achieved the result. It is still special for us professionals to return home and bring joy to the people of Ghana," Essien told reporters.

"Teamwork brought us success as in previous qualifiers. The side did not feel under pressure because we are used to playing in front of packed crowds like the one in Accra tonight.

"The people of Ghana wanted us to win and we did not let them down. What a fantastic feeling to be the first African country to qualify for the first World Cup to be staged in Africa."

Serbia-born coach Milovan Rajevac said: "It is a priceless honour for my players to represent their country and qualify for the World Cup.

"This team is very hungry to go to the finals again. My players are aware of what they can achieve and have the quality to go far. I always believed we would qualify and am very confident about the future."

It will be the second successive World Cup appearance for Ghana, who did best of the five African teams in Germany three years ago by reaching the knockout second round before losing 3-0 to defending champions Brazil.

A quarter of the 32 qualifiers for the first World Cup are known with Ghana joining Australia, Brazil, Japan, Netherlands, North Korea, South Korea and hosts South Africa.

Mali had threatened to put the Accra celebrations on hold by taking the lead through former France youth international Mamadou Samassa on 71 minutes only for Mohamed Aoudou to equalise three minutes from full-time.

Tunisia snatched a 2-2 draw in Nigeria thanks to an 90th-minute Oussama Darragi goal in a top-of-the-table Group B clash and maintained a two-point advantage with two rounds left in October and November.

A capacity 60,000 crowd saw Osaze Odemwingie fire the 'Super Eagles' into the lead via a close-range shot midway through the first half only for Nabil Taider to level soon after.

Tunisia-based Michael Eneramo poked a a cross into the net 10 minutes from full-time to put the home team ahead again only for club mate Darragi to fire a Haitham Mrabet pass into the net from an acute angle.

Mozambique edged Kenya 1-0 in the same mini-league courtesy of a goal midway through the second half from veteran South Africa-based striker Manuel 'Tico Tico' Bucuane.

Tunisia have eight points, Nigeria six, Mozambique four and Kenya three with the leaders chasing a fourth consecutive appearance at the quadrennial showcase of international football.

Adel Taarabt scored two minutes into stoppage time as Morocco were rewarded for some enterprising second-half play with a 1-1 draw away to Togo in a Group A clash.

Togo led from the fourth minute through Moustapaha Salifou as they returned to Lome after a three-match ban following post-match violence at a 2008 African Nations Cup qualifier.

Gabon have six points, Togo five, Cameroon four and Morocco three although the 'Indomitable Lions' have a chance to go top Wednesday when they host the surprise pacesetters in Yaounde.

The five group winners qualify for the World Cup in South Africa between June 11 and July 11 and the top three finishers in each mini-league secure places at the Nations Cup five months earlier with hosts Angola.

Injured Robinho to miss Brazil's qualifier against Chile

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian striker Robinho will miss his national team's World cup qualifier against Chile on Wednesday due to a thigh muscle injury.

According to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Sunday, the Manchester City forward had a scan that confirmed the injury to his right thigh during the second half of Saturday's 3-1away win over Argentina.

With the weekend's victory, Dunga's team qualified for next year's World Cup finals with three games to spare.

The squad is already missing suspended Kaka, Luis Fabiano, captain Lucio and midfielder Ramires.

Chile are second in the South American group with three points behind leaders Brazil, and a victory against Brazil could sent them into the finals for the first time since 1998.

The top four qualify automatically for next year's finals in South Africa, and the fifth goes into a two-leg playoff against the fourth team in the final CONCACAF group.

Capello can solve England dilemma, says Lampard

LONDON, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- England midfielder Frank Lampard has backed manager Fabio Capello to make the right choice between starting Jermain Defoe or Emile Heskey in the World Cup qualifier against Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday.

Defoe came off the bench to score what proved to be the winner as England warmed up for the Croatia clash with a 2-1 home win in a friendly with Slovenia on Saturday.

Defoe's scoring record has led to calls for him to start the Croatia game but Lampard, who opened the scoring against Solvenia from the penalty spot, has backed Capello to make the right call.

"The question of starting is obviously the manager's decision, "Lampard told English news agency PA.

"He has shown in his career he makes the right decision more often that not."

Lampard praised both Defoe and Heskey for the different qualities they bring to the England set-up.

"Jermain is making headlines as he's scoring goals," said Lampard.

"Emile has made a great case because of the way he has played for England for a long time."

Lampard admitted the penalty he scored against Slovenia, awarded when Wayne Rooney clashed with defender Bostjan Cesar, probably should not have been given.

The England midfielder defended Rooney who had been accused by some of diving to earn the spot kick.

Lampard said: "I think maybe it wasn't a penalty. I think it was clearly not a dive but probably not a penalty."

Lampard feels the memories of England's 3-2 loss to Croatia at Wembley which saw them miss out on Euro 2008 will motivate the players.

"It was a very low point for all of us, individually and as a group. We won't forget that and will use it as a positive," he said.

"We need to keep cool heads, keep calm, but also show passion and desire to win the game. There certainly won't be tackles anyone is pulling out of."

England have won all seven of their qualifiers going into Wednesday's clash, but a place in South Africa next summer is not yet assured.

"It's been fantastic how we've gone about it so far, the results we've got home and away," Lampard added. "We need to finish the job, the sooner the better.

"The aim is to qualify - simple as that. If it doesn't happen on Wednesday night we have to make it happen the next time."

The Chelsea midfielder also believes there is no reason to worry too much about England's defense.

"I think in qualifying the defending has been pretty good. We've gone to Croatia and Belarus and done pretty well," he said.

Croatia will be missing midfielder Luka Modric through injury and defender Vedran Corluka through suspension against England, but Lampard believes Slaven Bilic's men will still be a force to be reckoned with.

"I think they're two very good players," he said. "Modric particularly is the playmaker if the team. I know what a good player he is from playing against him against Croatia and Tottenham. Croatia will miss them, but Slaven Bilic has said he has worked on the strength of the team."

FIFA confirms Ghana's berth for 2010 World Cup finals

ACCRA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- World soccer governing body FIFA has officially confirmed the qualification of the Black Stars of Ghana for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Black Stars beat the Desert Hawks of Sudan 2-0 last Sunday at the Ohene Djan Sorts stadium in Accra to move to 12 points, seven more than closest rivals the Eagles of Mali with two games to go.

FIFA General Secretary, Jerome Valcke confirmed the participation in a letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and copied to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Organizing Committee for the FIFA World Cupon Monday.

"After two years of disputed and exciting preliminary competition in Africa, the Black Stars reached yesterday the necessary points to be crowned with success in these hard-fought qualifiers.

"We are pleased to warmly congratulate the GFA and its national team for brilliantly qualifying as the first African team for the final tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, next to South Africa, the hosts.

The General Secretary reminded the GFA to get in contact with the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee, South Africa in order to further advance in the logistical preparations of the tournament for the Black Stars.

Valcke added that his outfit is looking forward to a continued smooth cooperation with the Ghana Association.

The Stars next play Benin in Cotonou on Oct. 10 before wrapping up against Mali in Accra on Nov. 14.

Ghana was the only African team to reach the last 16 in their maiden attempt three years ago at the Germany 2006 World Cup.

Toni may move if still benched in Bayern

BERLIN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Italian international Luca Toni will ponder a move if he is still on bench at Bayern Munich, the striker has said, noting that he aims to keep form for next year's World Cup.

Toni claimed that he needs to play to keep his chances intact of representing his country at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Monday's edition of German sports magazine Kicker reported.

Toni is set to return to training from Achilles tendon problems. But the Bundesliga top scorer in 2007-2008 season could find it hard to make the starting lineup under new Bayern coach Louis van Gaal, given the likes of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Miroslav Klose, Ivica Olic and Mario Gomez on Munich's squad.

"Up to now the team was happy that I am here. If that is no longer the case I will consider a move," Toni told Kicker.

"If I have to take a place on the substitutes' bench I will take this place. But I know my value and a lot of (other) clubs know my strength. So I will have to reconsider if I don't get a chance to play. After all, the World Cup is coming up," he added.

The 32-year-old joined Munich in 2007 from Fiorentina of Italy and has scored 38 goals in 56 Bundesliga appearances for the German top club.

Tickets for Mexico-Honduras duel sold out

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The tickets for the do-or-die World Cup qualifier between Mexico and Honduras on Wednesday were sold out, ticket office management told Xinhua on Monday.

The officials from the Azteca Stadium, the venue of the duel, said that all the tickets of the 115,000 seats were sold out a couple of days ago.

Furthermore, the tickets for the match of Mexico vs. United States were also sold out.

The tickets were released on Aug. 19, costing from 11 U.S. dollars to 37 dollars. However in the resale nearby the stadium the cheapest tickets were sold by 30 dollars.

Mexico-Honduras match has generated great expectations after Mexico whitewashed Costa Rica 3-0 on Saturday. Honduras upset Mexico 3-1 at home in their first leg.

Currently, the leader of the North and Central America and Caribbean region general board is Honduras with 13 points, followed by the United States also with 13 points, and Mexico with12 points.

The North and Central America and Caribbean Football Confederation (CONCACAF) provides three tickets for the World Cup South Africa 2010.

Beckham may seek Premiership return

LONDON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Former England captain David Beckham said through a BBC radio interview on Monday that he may seek a Premiership return to keep his World Cup hope alive.

The 34-year-old soccer icon, who is under a five-year deal with LA Galaxy of the United States' Major Soccer League, managed to spend five months on loan with Serie A's AC Milan last year.

The American season shuts down between November and March, and Beckham told BBC that he has several options for a return to the English Premier League.

"Everyone knows I will be planning to come back to Europe," he said. "I don't know (if it will be in England), there are a few options, put it that way."

"I have had an incredible career so far...But if we reach another World Cup and I play some part, it will be up there with all the other achievements I've had in my career," added the former Manchester United striker.

Keeper Enke unfit for Germany's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan

BERLIN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- German Football Federation (DFB) announced Monday that national team goalkeeper Robert Enke was unfit for Wednesday's World Cup Group Four qualifier against Azerbaijan.

The 32-year-old Hannover goalie had an infection and was ordered to undergo medical tests, according to the DFB.

"I am bitterly disappointed," said Enke. "But I feel I am not fully fit and I cannot take such a risk in a World Cup qualifier."

His place in Germany's starting lineup is likely to be taken by Rene Adler.

Germany are now leading the Group Four with a point ahead of runners-up Russia.

Malouda out of squad, Henry denies criticising coach

French national soccer team's midfielder Florent Malouda (L) vies with defender Sebastien Squilacci during a training session, on September 06, 2009 in Clairefontaine, southern Paris, one day after France's World Cup 2010 qualifying football match against Roumania.(Photo/AFP)

PARIS 鈥?1998 World Cup winners France's increasingly fraught qualifying campaign for next year's finals deepened on Monday when captain Thierry Henry denied he had criticised coach Raymond Domenech in front of the rest of the squad.

Squad-mate and fellow 2006 World Cup finalist Florent Malouda also revealed that he had only learnt he was not even among the substitutes for last Saturday's qualifier with Romania at the Stade de France when he entered the dressing-room and he saw there was no shirt for him.

Henry's denial - Le Parisien claimed on Monday that in Friday's team meeting the Barcelona star had publicly slammed Domenech - and Malouda's clear displeasure at the manner in which he learnt of his non-selection will do nothing for morale as they head for a crucial qualifier with Group Seven leaders Serbia on Wednesday.

Henry was forced to clarify what had gone on on Friday on the eve of the 1-1 draw which left the French four points adrift of the Serbs with just three matches remaining and in danger of having to go through a play-off to progress to South Africa.

"Nothing happened on Friday evening," protested Henry to French TV station TF1.

"There was a discussion between the squad and the coach as is usual.

"It was a constructive discussion... which must stay between the players and the coach.

"I did not question the coach's qualities. There was never a clash between us," added Henry, who was quoted by Le Parisien as telling Domenech that the players had no idea where they were to play and lacked any direction.

Henry, who scored France's goal in the Romania match, insisted the camp was a happy one, something clearly not in Malouda's vocabulary.

"I saw when I entered the dressingroom that there no shirt had been prepared for me," the Chelsea star - who has enjoyed distant relations with Domenech having criticised him - told RTL radio station in an interview recorded on Sunday but only broadcast on Monday.

"I deduced from that that I was in either the starting line-up or the substitutes bench, that is how I came to learn of it.

"I was surprised, I thought at the very least I would feature at some stage.

"However, it is important to support ones friends, even from the stands, one has to get over one's disappointment.

"One is powerless to do anything sitting in the stands, one has fleas in ones pants, but that is how it is, it is the choice of the coach.

"It is a delicate matter to discuss, and is not an agreeable experience to live through, but it is important not to think about it too much, even if it is disappointing."

Capello thanks Bilic for team-talk

LONDON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- England boss Fabio Capello has thanked Slaven Bilic for providing the team-talk ahead of their World Cup qualifier and will simply tell his players to remember what the Croatia manager has branded them.

Capello's men can qualify for South Africa with victory against the side that denied them a place at Euro 2008 - but there is the added incentive of proving Bilic wrong after he stirred up the mind games this week, English website Sportinglife.com said.

Bilic has suggested that England have lost their "Englishness" under Capello, which the Italian feels has motivated his squad.

"Thank you Mr Bilic," Capello said. "It is the best. I have no need to motivate my players after this. It's fantastic assistance."

Instead of a moving speech to rally his players towards eight wins from eight Group Six qualifiers, Capello's message will be simple.

"You have to remember what Bilic said," he said.

Capello has also warned Bilic that his side has improved since their 4-1 win in Zagreb last season, when Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick and gave England their momentum for the rest of the campaign.

"In Croatia we played very well and won 4-1," he said. "We played a lot of good games for qualification and won seven games, improving in every game."

Dunga to start Adriano, Nilmar against Chile

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Brazil coach Dunga announced Tuesday to start Adriano and Nilmar on attacking line for Wednesday's World Cup South American qualifier hosting Chile.

Adriano recently earned his spot back on the team after a five month absence due to a poor attitude and reckless behavior, while Nilmar, having made four caps only, will start his second game while representing Brazil.

The Brazilian national squad has missed four regular starters due to injuries and suspensions, including striker Robinho and Luis Fabiano.

Robinho was forced out with an injury and Fabiano is under a one-game suspension after accumulating his third yellow card in as many games.

Brazil, which will host Chile on September 9 in the northern city of Salvador in the 16th round of the South American qualifications, has already guaranteed a spot in the 2010 World Cup Finals.

Dunga, however, claimed that he would not take the match against Chile for granted, and he promised not to underestimate Chile.

The coach is recently rumored to plan on carrying at least four strikers to next year's World Cup Finals in South Africa.

With the team's leading scorer Luis Fabiano and Robinho nearly guaranteed, two positions are left open while Nilmar and Adriano hope to make the cut.

However, an eager Ronaldo looms in the background, recovering from a recent hand surgery and liposuction.

May time tell who Dunga will call to defend Brazil in their campaign to bring home a record sixth World Cup title.

Paraguayan president forecasts soccer triumph over Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo visited on Tuesday the players from the Paraguayan soccer national team and expected his team a 2-0 win over Argentina on Wednesday.

According to information reaching here from Asuncion, Paraguay's capital, Lugo talked with the national team players and coach at the Sports and Education High Performance Center of Ypane (CARDE) in the suburbs of Asuncion.

Lugo forecasted a triumph of 2-0 over Argentina in the match to be played on Wednesday in "Defensores del Chaco" Stadium in Asuncion for the South American eliminatory to the World Cup South Africa 2010.

"We came to encourage them, to tell them that all the country supports them. We hope, tomorrow, they can give Paraguay the joy it needs," Lugo told reporters.

"I do not want to risk (the score), but we will win. That is the people's wish.. I think 2-0," Lugo said.

The South American general board is leaded by Brazil with 30 points, Paraguay has 27 points and Argentina has 22 points.

Survey: Thumbs up for 2010 S Africa World Cup

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- South Africans' confidence in successfully hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup is at a record high, said a survey released on Tuesday.

Eighty-seven percent of those polled showed confidence that the country would be ready to host the competition, research company SPORT+MARKT said.

This was the highest level of confidence shown since the first study, conducted in December 2008, when 73 percent of respondents declared their confidence, followed by 83 percent in March.

Ninety-one percent of those questioned said the spectacle would improve public infrastructure, while another 97 percent said it would strengthen the country's tourism industry.

The study indicated that 66 percent believed crime would be an issue for visitors to the tournament, compared to the 58 percent who thought so in March.

The number of interviewees who believed local businesses would inflate prices during the tournament rose from 59 percent in March to 77 percent.

Half the respondents said transport infrastructure was below par, up from 42 percent who thought so in March.

The survey was conducted amongst 1004 people in all major cities and World Cup host cities, with quotas for ethnic origin, age and gender. Interviews were conducted on a face-to-face basis.

According to the research the higher scores could be attributed to an increased awareness of the World Cup due to media coverage, and the performance of the national team in the Confederations Cup.

"The scores reflect a higher sensitivity to all aspects of hosting the World Cup and an anxious enthusiasm to put on a good show for the watching world," read the report.

FIFA to monitor SAFA elections

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- World soccer governing body FIFA has vowed to closely monitor the upcoming South Africa Football Association (SAFA) elections to ensure no impact on preparations for the 2010 World Cup.

"We said we'd like to see it (the elections) postponed until after 2010, but SAFA refused, so we'll be monitoring them very carefully to make sure that they do not impact on the World Cup," FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke told a press briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Both 2010 local organizing committee CEO Danny Jordaan and Chairman Irvin Khoza are contesting the SAFA presidency. This raised concerns earlier this year that should one man be elected over the other, the organizing of the World Cup would be hindered due to alleged divisions within SAFA. SAFA has since dismissed these claims as malicious and misleading.

"When we see competition is very tough between two people we work with... we have to protect the organization of the World Cup," Falcke said.

Falcke and Jordaan were briefing the media on progress made on preparations for the World Cup.

Jordaan said things were running smoothly and that most stadiums were nearing completion.

"Progress on construction of the six new FIFA World Cup stadiums is good. With all stadiums now between 80 and 92 percent complete, all that remains before the stadiums are handed over to the organizing committee are the final touches to the stadium bowls and work on the precinct areas surrounding the stadiums."

Jordaan said the LOC would also address spiraling costs for construction projects, following reports that cities like Johannesburg had to slash their budgets for the current financial year to keep up with the soaring costs of the 2010 stadiums.

"It is unfortunate with the global economic crisis... but the impact is going to be very small. It is a matter we'll have to address," he said.

Jordaan said there had been an overwhelming response to the 15,000 volunteer spots available, with 67,999 people from 170 countries applying.

Argentina defiant ahead of crucial Paraguay mission

MONTEVIDEO 鈥?Having succumbed to only their second home defeat in World Cup qualifying history against Brazil on Saturday, Argentina face a make-or-break trip to Paraguay on Wednesday.

The 3-1 loss to Dunga's side, who are now assured of a place at the 2010 finals in South Africa, left two-time world champions Argentina in the fourth and last automatic qualifying place in the South American standings.

Paraguay are five points above them in third and need just three points to qualify for the finals after a qualification campaign that has defied all expectations.

Argentina, meanwhile, have not won on the road in a competitive match since a 2-0 victory in Venezuela in October 2007 and have scored a meagre three goals in the intervening six away fixtures.

Should an Argentine defeat be accompanied by away wins for Ecuador, in Bolivia, and Colombia, in Uruguay, Diego Maradona's men will drop to sixth, below even a qualifying place for the play-off against the fourth-best side from the North, Central America and Caribbean zone (CONCACAF).

"I'm feeling composed. There's no cause for alarm," said Maradona, who was part of the Argentina side that came through a play-off against Australia to qualify for the 1994 tournament.

"It won't be easy to go to Paraguay, but we'll see what solutions we can find for our problems and try and take the three points.

"We had to beat Brazil and we lost. There's no time for feeling sorry for yourself, though. You have to keep looking forward."

Goalkeeper Mariano Andujar echoed his manager's upbeat outlook.

"This isn't over," he said. "We need to pick ourselves up quickly because we have another final coming up. It's not over and it's still in our hands."

Paraguay and Chile each require just a win to guarantee qualification, but if Colombia and Ecuador both lose they will qualify regardless.

"We're there now, I can feel it," said Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino after their 1-0 win over Bolivia in Asuncion at the weekend.

"We've taken a gigantic step thanks to this really important win."

Qualification for Chile would guarantee the presence of at least one Argentine in South Africa next summer, with Marcelo Bielsa hoping for a second crack at World Cup glory after leading his native Argentina to a group-stage exit in 2002.

The philosophical 54-year-old has revolutionised the Chilean set-up since taking over in 2007 and midfielder Jorge Valdivia believes the team owe all their success to the Rosario-born tactician.

"He is humble and says all the credit should go to the players, but he changed everything: the group discipline, the condition of the training camp, the way the other teams look at us," said Valdivia.

Chile's meeting with Brazil in Salvador De Bahia is sure to have a celebratory air following the home side's historic victory over sworn enemies Argentina, but Selecao captain Lucio says they cannot afford to slacken off.

"The most important thing is that we've kept on winning, we're through to the finals and we can take the time now to work on a few things before the World Cup," said the Inter Milan centre-back.

With three matches remaining, only rock-bottom Peru stand no chance of finishing in the top five, although second-bottom Bolivia have an eight-point deficit to make up on fifth-placed Colombia in the play-off berth.

Wednesday's matches represent something of a last-chance saloon for seventh-placed Uruguay and eight-placed Venezuela, who host Peru, but victory for either side could put them back into the qualifying mix.

Argentina boasts better triumph records than Paraguay

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Argentine soccer national team has more triumphs than Paraguayan team in the records of the matches played between both teams, local sports press said on Tuesday.

Argentina has won 50 times over Paraguay, they tied 29 times and it was defeated 14 times. However Argentina has not won a match in Asuncion (capital of Paraguay) since July 6, 1997, when they won 2-1 with goals scored by Marcelo Gallardo and Juan Sebastian Veron.

During the South American eliminatory matches for World Cup South Africa 2010, Argentina has won four matches, tied eight and lost one.

During the 93 matches played between Argentina and Paraguay, Argentina has scored 191 goals, while Paraguay scored 96.

During the matches between both team played in Asuncion, Argentina has won 15 matches and scored 54 goals, while Paraguay won 11 matches and scored 45 goal. They tied 11 matches.

However, during eliminatory matches, Paraguay has won only once against Argentina during the eliminatory for the World Cup Germany 2006, in a match played on Sept. 3, 2005, with a goal scored by Roque Santa Cruz.

Portugal defeats Hungary in World Cup qualifier

BUDAPEST, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's national eleven beat Hungary 1-0 at Budapest's Puskas stadium Thursday night, relegating the home team to 4th place in its group.

Portugal took the lead in the 10th minute with a goal by Pepe and never looked back.

Hungary will play two more games in the group, one against Portugal, a team it has been unable to beat in any of their nine previous contests, and one against Denmark, which is in first place in the qualifier group. Both will be away games for Hungary.

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz said he felt the Hungarian side had been playing a closed game and accepted the single-goal defeat early on. But, he added, "This group is still open because whoever wins the next two could have a ticket to South Africa."

Hungarian coach Ervin Koeman blamed Hungary's lower level of technical skills for the defeat. "We were on the ball mentally and played well technically. But they scored the goal and we didn't."

Acknowledging that Hungary was not considered likely to win its next two away games, he said "...but that's no reason why we can't win in Portugal and Denmark. No one would have believed we'd still have a mathematical chance after eight games."

World Cup Organizing Committee congratulates England on qualification

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee South Africa (OC) on Wednesday congratulated the England football team on their qualification.

"Fabio Capello's side has powered their way to South Africa 2010 and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with next year. They are playing very good football and the team and will certainly come to South Africa as one of the tournament's favorites," said Jordaan.

"The English Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and arguably the most followed globally. All the England players are popular in South Africa and a number of them visited the country with their club teams and with the national team in recent years," he added.

HARBIN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- China drew with Senegal 0-0 at an international soccer friendly here on Wednesday.

China were the better side in the whole game with more possession and shots. But the Africans did well in the defense.

The hosts had their best chance of the first half when central defender Feng Xiaoting headed a nice pass a little wide of the far post in the 38th minute.

China launched stronger attacks after the break and created several good chances. Midfielder Qu Bo missed a one-on-one small angle shot following Jiang Ning's fine pass on 57 minutes, before Jiang had a half-volley inside the box parried by the keeper.

Jiang squandered a golden opportunity in the 68th minute, when his close range shot was denied by an advancing keeper. Du Wei and Yang Hao had two threatening long range efforts in the last few minutes, but both went a little bit wide of the post.

Paraguay seals World Cup berth with 1-0 win over Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Paraguay sealed a berth to the 2010 World Cup finals with two matches to go after nipping a 1-0 win over Argentina at Asuncion on Wednesday.

Nelson Valdes kicked a superb goal on 27 minutes to settle the match, during which Argentina were reduced to 10 men after veteran midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron committed a second offence in the second half.

After Wednesday's defeat, the two-time World Cup champions, temporarily in the fifth place with 22 points from six wins, four draws and six losses, was left in real danger of missing out on the finals for the first time since 1970.

According to the qualification rules of the South American zone, the top four teams earn tickets for the World Cup finals, while the 5th placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the 4th placed team from North, Central America and Caribbean.

Earlier on Wednesday, Paraguay President Fernando Lugo decided to grant a holiday to the country's public servants so that they could watch the Paraguay-Argentina soccer match.

"The Presidency of the Republic, through the Decree 2,886, declares a holiday to the public administration workers, decentralized entities, and public education institutions, at Sept. 9, from 3 p.m," the government said.

According to the document, the reason for the holiday was the extreme importance of the Paraguay-Argentina match in the qualifying process for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

LONDON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- England secured their appearance in next year's FIFA World Cup finals with two games to go by smashing Croatia 5-1 here on Wednesday.

Due to the outstanding performance of Aaron Lennon from Tottenham Spurs, the hosts established their predominance with two goals only after 18 minutes. The 22-year-old winger was replaced by veteran David Beckham with 10 minutes remaining, enjoying the passionate applause from the crowd exclusively.

A deft Lennon darted into the area after seven minutes and was tripped by Josip Simunic. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard put the "Three Lion" ahead with a confident penalty kick.

Then, it was Lennon that delivered a fine cross from the right flank to the far post with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard heading home 11 minutes later.

The 0-0 draw between Belarus and Ukraine meant one point was enough for England to confirm their place in South Africa, but Fabio Capello's team finished their job much better by scoring three more times in the second half.

Lampard completed his second goal just before the one-hour stroke when he headed in Glen Johnson's superb cross. Seven minutes later, Gerrard also made a double by nodding in Wayne Rooney's cross.

After Da Silva Eduardo putting one goal back for the suffering visitors, Rooney ruthlessly gave them a final blow when goalkeeper Vedran Runje fluffed a back-pass to assist the Manchester United striker.

When the 34-year-old Beckham finished his 114th game for England with his right arm held high and thumb up, England reached the World Cup finals by recording an eighth successive win in the qualifying campaign.

Serbia ties France 1-1 in World Cup qualifier

BELGRADE, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Serbia secured a 1-1 draw with France in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday evening, consolidating its lead in Group Seven for a berth at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

A 13-minute penalty from Nenad Milijas gave Serbia the lead in front of 55,000 passionate fans in Belgrade's Red Star Stadium.

The spot kick was ordered after French keeper Hugo Lloris was sent off for bringing down Serbian striker Nikola Zigic in the penalty area.

The Frenchmen soon took their revenge and Thierry Henry scored the equalizer in the 31st minute.

After Wednesday's matches, Serbia leads the Group Seven with 19 points after eight games, four points more than France. Third-placed Austria has 11 points. Lithuania is level on nine points with Romania. Faroe Islands is at the bottom with four points.

According to relevant rules, the group winners in the European zone qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals directly while the best eight runners-up from the nine groups go through to a play-off for four tickets.

Germany sweeps Azerbaijan 4-0 in World Cup qualifier

BERLIN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Germany swept visiting Azerbaijan 4-0 in Hanover on Wednesday night to consolidate its lead in 2010 World Cup European qualifying Group D with 22 points from eight matches.

Russia closely followed Germany with 21 points from eight matches.

In the Germany-Azerbaijan game, German captain Michael Ballack scored a penalty in the first half, and striker Miroslav Klose found the net twice while Lukas Podolski sealed the 4-0 victory.

Despite the win, German head coach Jaochim Loew was not happy with the first half when German squad showed flat offensive and slacken defense.

"After the early goal, I was completely dissatisfied with the game," said Loew after the match.

After the interval, veteran Klose was sent to the pitch which was proven a smart choice.

"Sending Miroslav Klose for the second half was like liberation. He is not yet at 100 percent but he played well today," said Loew.

Looking ahead, the head coach said his team was "well prepared to travel to Russia."

Spain crushes Estonia 3-0 in World Cup qualifier

MADRID, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Spain fixed its place in next summer's FIFA World Cup finals with a comfortable 3-0 win over Estonia in Merida on Wednesday night.

Spain's triumph coupled with Bosnia-Herzegovina's failure to beat Turkey guaranteed the European champions a berth for the finals in South Africa.

Spain has so far managed a 100 percent record in their qualifying group with eight wins and 24 points from eight matches played.

Coach Vicente del Bosque made changes to the side that had brushed past Belgium at the weekend with Marcos Senna and Cesc Fabrigas starting in midfield for the Spanish.

After a start that saw both sides having spells of possession, Spain began to take control and it was Fabrigas who opened the scoring after 32 minutes.

The Arsenal midfielder took a pass from David Silva in the Estonia penalty area before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

The Spanish continued to dominate and could have added a second goal before the break with both Gerard Pique and David Villa having chances to score.

As it was the 15,000 fans who had packed into the Romano Stadium in Merida had to wait until the closing minutes of the match before the Spanish finally confirmed the win and their place in the Finals.

Substitute Santi Cazorla made it 2-0 with eight minutes left after Fabrigas turned provider with the final pass.

It was then Cazorla's turn to set up a team-mate as he provided the pass that allowed Juan Mata, another second half substitute to complete Spain's triumph with a left foot shot in injury time.

Maradona's woes deepen after Paraguay defeat

MONTEVIDEO 鈥?The chances of two-time World Cup champions Argentina failing to make the World Cup finals for the first time since 1970 shortened as they were beaten 1-0 by Paraguay in Asuncion which saw the victors reach their eighth finals.

The defeat will inevitably raise further questions over the stewardship of coach Diego Maradona - an Argentinian playing icon for his inspiring them to the 1986 trophy and to the 1990 final - as the Argentinians slipped to fifth in the table with just two matches remaining to seal one of the two remaining automatic qualifying places.

However, despite having individual talents on the pitch such as Lionel Messi, Maradona also either left out of the squad entirely or deigned not to put on the bench Lisandro Lopez, Esteban Cambiasso and Walter Samuel to name but three of several.

Instead he had opted to put on the bench 35-year-old striker Martin Palermo - who won the last of his seven caps in 2000 and professed to be lost for words when he heard of his selection - and 36-year-old central defender Rolando Schiavi, who went even further on hearing of his selection by phoning Maradona to ask if it was a hoax.

However, Maradona refused to accept that he had made any mistakes and went on the attack against his critics.

"I am not afraid of criticism. I am afraid of nobody. I am doing my job, I have my team and I am going to go forward," said Maradona, who has overseen four defeats in his six World Cup qualifiers since taking over.

"Since I have been 15-years-old, I have been scared of nobody. Now I am 48 and I am going to continue to battle with them (the press)," added Maradona, whose side face a home game against tailenders Peru and then a daunting away trip to Uruguay in October.

Ironically the two substitutes almost combined to grab an unlikely point - the Argentinians task made harder by the 53rd minute sending-off of veteran midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron - in the dying minutes but Schiavi could not quite get his outstretched boot to Palermo's downward header.

Paraguay deserved their victory with a scintillating first-half display capped by a stunning goal from Nelson Valdes, who played despite a nagging knee injury.

Earlier Argentina had slipped to fifth because Ecuador had beaten Bolivia 3-1 in La Paz.

Ecuador's victory - which included a goal by Manchester United's big summer signing Antonio Valencia - sees them edge closer to a third successive place at the World Cup finals.

Chile were unable to join Paraguay in the finals as they lost 4-2 away to already qualified Brazil, thanks largely to a hat-trick by the rarely used 25-year-old Villarreal striker Nilmar.

The Chileans - seeking a first appearance at the finals since 1998 - had pulled themselves back from 2-0 down to 2-2, thanks to a double from Humberto Suazo.

However, Nilmar struck twice to end Chile's hopes of bringing to an end Brazil's proud record of never losing a home World Cup tie and their 35-year-old unbeaten home record in competitive matches.

The one good piece of news for Argentina was that Uruguay beat Colombia 3-1 in Montevideo.

Had Colombia won they too would have moved above Argentina, but were unable to gain their first away win of the series while Uruguay prevailed after a run of four matches without a win.

In a fiery encounter both sides had one player sent-off, Uruguay's Carlos Valdes in the 30th minute when they were leading 1-0. The visitors were also reduced to 10-men when striker Teofilio Gutierrez was red carded for deliberate handball at the start of the second-half.

Uruguay wrapped up victory in the 88th minute largely thanks to the persistence of Atletico Madrid star Diego Forlan as he chased what seemed a lost cause when a shot was deflected and was heading out.

However, the veteran striker got to the ball and cut it back inside for Sebastian Eguren to rifle the ball home and rub salt into Colombia's wounds as his goal was the winner against the same opponents earlier in the campaign in what remains the Uruguayans sole away victory.

Uruguay's win sees them climb above Colombia into sixth, a point behind Argentina.

Venezuela, the only South American side never to appear at a World Cup finals, also moved to a point of Argentina with a fine 3-1 home win over bottom side Peru.

Marta officially arrives at Santos female soccer team

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The reigning world's best female soccer player, Marta, received a star's welcome on Thursday in her official presentation to the media and fans at Santos.

The player's acquisition came just weeks before the first-ever women's tournament of the Libertadores Cup.

The "Queen" was supposed to be introduced by the "King," Pele, however his appearance was compromised by a commercial shooting.

Marta was welcomed with fireworks, a red carpet and some 300 fans.

"After many fine performances from the Brazilian national soccer team as well as my individual accomplishments, women's soccer has grown a lot. We hope that it will grow even more with Santos' participation in the women's Libertadores Cup. I congratulate Santos and the team president Marcelo Teixeira. The girls are very grateful for the support you are showing," declared an emotional Marta.

"It is exciting to return to Brazil to play. I have always had this dream. We will all work hard to win the up-coming titles," added Marta.

Marta will wear the same number of Pele when he played at the club, No.10. Marta said that it is an honor to represent jersey No. 10 at Santos.

The Libertadores Cup will take place from Oct. 4 to 18. Later in the year, the Santos women's team will also participate in the female edition of the Brazilian Cup.

After the Brazilian Cup, Marta will return to the United States and her professional women's team, the Los Angeles Sol.

Chilean forward vows to get World Cup berth

SANTIAGO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chilean forward Arturo Vidal said Thursday that the team was upset after losing 4-2 to Brazil on Wednesday in the 2010 World Cup South American qualifying tour.

"We are a bit sad because we thought we will get the ticket in these two dates," Vidal, player of Bayer Leverkusen, said.

Vidal was the only one giving comments to the local press.

Brazil scored the first two goals but Chile managed to equalize the score when a Brazilian player was red carded. However Brazil showed all its power again and young talented striker Nilmar scored twice to seal the victory. Nilmar also played a hat-trick in the game.

Brazil is leading the general board with 33 points, followed by Paraguay with 30 points. They have already got tickets for the World Cup South Africa 2010. Chile is standing third with 27 points.

Former Real coach Ramos takes over CSKA Moscow

MOSCOW, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos has taken over CSKA Moscow from Brazilian Zico, announced the Russian club on Thursday.

The Spaniard will lead CSKA for the rest of the year as the last season's runners-up dropped to the fourth place in Russian Premier League recently.

"I love new challenges. We are looking forward to helping the team realize their potential in Europe and working really hard over the next three months," the 54-year-old Ramos told his personal website.

Top two finishers of the League automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

CSKA, however, denied having sacked Zico and called it a rumor.

The Brazilian took in charge of the club at the beginning of the current Russian season and enjoyed instant success of leading the club to the Russian Cup and Super Cup titles

The CSKA, who face Manchester United, Besiktas and VfL Wolfsburg in Group B of Champions League, are now ten points behind local league leaders Rubin Kazan.

Injury forces Arshavin to sit out three Arsenal matches

LONDON, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Andrei Arshavin will miss next three matches of Arsenal after the Russian midfielder came back from his World Cup duty this week with a aggravated groin injury.

"We are upset because he should not have played. He was not in a condition where he could afford to play 90 minutes," the Premiership club's manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday.

The Russian captain played the whole of his country's 3-1 Group Four win over Wales in Cardiff on Wednesday having missed Saturday's game against Liechtenstein.

"We took him off against Manchester United (on Aug. 29) because he was injured already at halftime. He will be out for Saturday, Wednesday and certainly next Saturday," said Wenger.

The three matches are Arsenal's league game at Manchester City on Saturday, next week's Champions League opener away to Standard Liege and the following weekend's league match at home to Wigan Athletic.

Loew praises strikers, slams performance

Germany's Miroslav Klose shoots during the World Cup Group Four qualifying match between Germany and Azerbaijan in Hanover, northern Germany, on Wednesday. Germany won 4-0.(Photo/AFP)

HANOVER: Germany coach Joachim Loew singled out goal scorers Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski for praise after the 4-0 win over Azerbaijan on Wednesday, but slammed his side's first-half performance.

Germany suffered the rare humiliation of being booed off the pitch by their own fans at half time following a poor performance after captain Michael Ballack had converted a 13th-minute penalty.

Loew said he read his side the riot act at the break before bringing on Bayern Munich star Klose - the top-scorer at the last World Cup - to play as the lone striker in a 4-3-3 formation.

"After the early goal, I was totally unhappy with the performance," said Loew with his side facing a key showdown against Group Four rivals Russia in Moscow on Oct 10 with an automatic place in South Africa at stake. "I told the team in very clear terms at half time that we can't accept a performance like that and the spectators' whistles also made it clear they were not happy."

Klose's appearance paid immediate dividends as the 31-year-old netted twice in the second half, along with Cologne teammate Lukas Podolski, to seal a comfortable win.

Klose has now scored 47 goals for Germany, leaving him joint third on the list of all-time German top scorers alongside Rudi Voeller and Jurgen Klinsmann, after 91 appearances while Podolski has hit 34 goals in 66 matches.

"For Klose, the second half was a liberation as he showed what he can do," said Loew.

"He is not yet 100 percent fit but he was outstanding.

"Both he and Lukas Podolski have unbelievable goal-to-game ratios.

"We now have 22 points from a possible 24, which is near perfect in terms of qualification.

"We are now well prepared to travel to Russia."

And former German national coach Bertie Vogts, who is now the Azerbaijan trainer, said he was content his side made life difficult for Germany.

"We made life hard for the Germans in the first half," said Vogts, who led Germany to the Euro '96 title.

"Before the game, I met Miro Klose and I told him I was happy he wasn't playing.

"Then Jogi Loew made the error and brought him on," joked Vogts.

Chelsea star Ballack, who drilled home an early penalty, said the game with Russia will now be the toughest of the whole campaign.

"We have reached our target, now it will come down to the wire," said the German captain.

"The game in Russia will be the most difficult of the entire campaign.

"We began well but after the first goal we inexplicably lost our way. But in the second half we did OK."

With first-choice goalkeeper Robert Enke ruled out with a mystery virus, his replacement, Rene Adler of Bayer Leverkusen, shone and kept another clean sheet after shutting out South Africa in Saturday's 2-0 friendly win.

"We have achieved our target, so we can afford to be a little merry this evening," said the goalkeeper.

"I tried to be convincing with my performance.

"Things can change very quickly, I wasn't even in the team for the game against Azerbaijan in Baku last month (Germany won 2-0)."

But Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm was at a loss to explain Germany's poor first-half performance.

"We must not repeat the 20 to 25 minutes we showed before half time," said the 25-year-old.

"You can't afford to play like that in front of your own crowd. It was so bad but we actually did much better as the game went on. But the first half was simply incomprehensible."

With Russia beating Wales 3-1 in Cardiff, Germany travel to Moscow knowing they can ill-afford a repeat of their first-half nightmare against their main rivals who are just a point behind them in the table.

Serbia's Antic lauds French fighting spirit

BELGRADE: Serbia coach Radomir Antic praised 10-man France for a spirited fightback in a 1-1 draw against his team in their World Cup Group Seven qualifier on Wednesday.

A win would have steered Serbia into next year's finals and they looked to be on their way after Nenad Milijas gave them the lead with a soft penalty, which also produced a red card for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Thierry Henry equalized in the 31st minute and France dominated proceedings in the second half, laying siege to the Serbian goal in the closing stages.

"France showed great morale and determination after falling behind, they kept possession really well and in the end we had to settle for a draw," Antic said.

"It was an extremely demanding game for us physically, mentally and tactically because it did not show that France were a man down after nine minutes.

"We had a great chance to secure our World Cup berth tonight but the opportunity also put a lot of pressure on our shoulders and I think my players dealt with it well.

"I am confident that we will finish the job when we play Romania here next month and I also hope for another full house in Red Star's stadium."

France coach Raymond Domenech, under pressure after a patchy qualifying campaign in which the 2006 finalists are still not assured of even a play off berth, was delighted with his team's performance.

"It was an exceptional match and that's the way we want to see the team play, with enthusiasm and quality," he said.

"I am happy we could show this to all those in France who keep supporting us," he said.

France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff said: "To concede an early goal and find ourselves down to 10 men after a few minutes was very tough mentally but we kept fighting and displayed an irreproachable spirit.

"In such conditions a draw is not a bad result but I really believe we would have won the match had we stayed with 11 men."

AFA website under hacker attack, Maradona mocked

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The website of the Argentine Soccer Association (AFA) on Friday was under a hacker attack, in which a picture of Argentina coach Diego Maradona wearing a T-shirt of Brazil was published.

"One image worth thousands words," said the image published by the self named KKR hacker, who used the publicity of a Brazilian drink that Maradona did in 2006, and for which he was paid 150,000 U.S. dollars.

Second half substitutions help Barcelona beat Getafe

MADRID, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Reigning Primera Liga Champion FC Barcelona continued its positive start to the season with a 2-0 win in Getafe on Saturday.

The entry of Leo Messi and Andres Iniesta as second half substitutes helped to break down a stubborn Getafe side that had matched Barcelona in the first half.

However, in the second period Barcelona's class in front of goal made the difference and goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Messi assured what in the was an easy win.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola decided to rest Leo Messi, who only returned from World Cup duty on Friday.

The Argentinean started the game on the substitute's bench along with Dani Alves, Thierry Henry and a fit again Andres Iniesta, while youngsters Jeffren and Pedro Rodriguez were given achance to shine.

Getafe started the brighter of the two sides and almost took the lead after just 12 minutes. Juan Albin thumped a volley from the edge of the area and was unlucky to see the ball hit the crossbar.

Barcelona was struggling to break down a well organized Getafe, that looked dangerous on the break and the home side hit the woodwork again just before the half hour.

Pedro Leon crossed from the right and Roberto Soldado's spectacular overhead kick hit the post before Victor Valdes was able to clear.

Barcelona dominated possession, but until the last minute of the half struggled to create clear chances

However on 44 minutes Ibrahimovich should have put them ahead. He controlled a pass from Jeffren, turned his marker and only a fine save from Oscar Ustari stopped him opening the score.

The game changed just before the hour when Messi and Iniesta replaced Pedro and Jeffren and Barcelona's play took a step up in quality.

Messi needed just six minutes to work space for Eric Abidal whose low cross took a deflection on its way to Ibrahimovich. The big forward stuck out a foot to deflect the ball past the helpless Ustari.

Fifteen minutes later Messi made it 2-0 with a header following a smart cross from Ibrahimovich and what had promised to be a complicated game for Barcelona turned out to be a comfortable win.

Barcleona, Real Madrid enjoy away wins

MADRID, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Both reigning Primera Liga Champions FC Barcelona and Real Madrid won their respective league matches on Saturday night.

Barcelona overcame a poor first half performance away to Getafe to win its second game in two matches.

Getafe hit the Barcelona post and crossbar in the first half, but everything changed with the introduction of Leo Messi as a second half substitute for Barca.

Messi helped set up the opening goal of the game with a pass that allowed Eric Abidal to cross for Zlatan Ibrahimovich to open the scoring for the Catalans.

The Argentinean then scored the second himself with a header to seal the win.

Real Madrid meanwhile won 3-0 away to Espanyol.

The game was the inaugural Primera Liga fixture in Espanyol's new Cornilla-El Prat Stadium, but it was an unhappy start for the home side.

Esteban Granero opened the scoring for Real Madrid after 38 minutes.

The big spenders were then able to find more space in the second period and Guti and Cristiano Ronaldo scored further goals in a result that confirmed Real Madrid as clear title candidates.

Meanwhile Real's city neighbors Atletico suffered a disappointing night at home to Racing Santander.

The run in to the match had seen a demonstration against the Atletico directors Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Enrique Cerezo and that feeling of discontent spilled into the game.

With a side lacking creativity in central midfield, Atletico struggled to create chances and it needed a moment of magic from Jose Jurado after 42 minutes.

However, Oscar Serrano levelled for the visitors after 46 minutes and although Racing had Jose Crespo sent off early in the second half, they held on with few problems, much to the frustration of the home fans.

Finally Sevilla ended Saturday's games with a comfortable 4-1 win at home to recently promoted Zaragoza.

LAGOS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Former African football player of the year Kalusha Bwalya identified the lack of team leader as one of the problems of the current squad of Nigeria's Super Eagles, the Nigerian Tribune newspaper reported on Saturday.

"With all the good players Nigeria has, I observed that the Eagles do not have a team leader," he said.

"Leading by 2-1, all the Eagles needed was someone who would kick the ball into touch, into the stands over the bar so that he would create a time to communicate with his mates and reorganize them before the arrival of the ball from wherever he had booted it," he added.

The Seoul '88 Olympics hero blamed the Eagles for allowing Tunisia possession and space which resulted in the equalizer.

The former PSV Eindhoven of Holland playmaker advised Nigeria to look ahead and re-organize.

Goias slams Corinthians 4-1 in Ronaldo's return

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Thrilled to see their star attraction back on the field, the home crowd could do nothing on Sunday as Goias walked all over Corinthians by 4-1.

Ronaldo's return caused commotion, but the Goias defense shut him and the rest of the Corinthians offense down.

Goias scored three goals before Corinthians could respond. The first came in the 7th minute when Julio Cesar assisted Iarley right in front of the Corinthians net, pushing the ball in for the first goal of the night.

The team's recent arrival, Fernandao, scored in the 23rd minute off a great individual play inside of the penalty box. Iarley scored the team's third goal in the 50th minute, spinning off the defense and rolling the ball into the home team's net.

Corinthians finally got on the board in the 73rd minute when Dentinho headed in a twice-deflected ball in front of the Goias net.

Dozens of Bochum fans protested Saturday after the loss to Mainz, demanding Koller's dismissal.

Sao Paulo snap Goias' winning streak

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo snapped the seven-game winning streak of Goias with a 3-1 home victory on Sunday in the Brazilian soccer championship.

With the win, Sao Paulo, coached by Ricardo Gomes, reached their best ranking of the 4th in this year's competition, keeping their hopes of winning another title.

Bochum stages "mission-impossible" comeback

BERLIN, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- In a top thriller of first round of German Bundesliga, newly-promoted Bochum staged a "mission impossible" comeback as they equalized Moenchengladbach 3-3 on Sunday.

Bochum pulled off the impossible, defying the odds to cancel out a three goal half-time deficit by scoring three goals within 12 minutes and save a point in their first Bundesliga match of the season.

"This was a curious match," said Gladbach coach Michael Frontzeck.

"Sometimes these things happen in football. We missed the chance to make it 4-0 and then conceded three goals. We just have to live with the one point we got," he added.

Indeed it was the visitors who began the game far the more potent threat and deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes through Gladbach's new Venezuelan signing Juan Arango. Arango slotted home after combining well with Raul Bobadilla and striker Roberto Colautti.

Just seven minutes later Gladbach doubled their lead with a shot from Colautti himself. And four minutes before the interval, the visitors must have thought their side had all but sewn up the three points as Dutch defender Roel Brouwers made it 3-0.

The half-time whistle brought some welcome respite for the Bochum players, who had been completely outclassed by a rampant Borussia Monchengladbach side that was showing no signs of slowing up. However, whatever Marcel Koller said in the dressing room clearly worked wonders as Bochum re-emerged from the tunnel a completely different proposition.

Bochum battled back in the second half, however, scoring twice in just 48 seconds through Mimoun Azaouagh's identical long-range efforts shortly after the restart.

Borussia were reduced to 10 men when Bonfim Dante fouled a charging Stanislav Sestak on the hour and three minutes later Sestak headed in the equalizer to complete the comeback.

In another game of the day, powerhouse Hamburger SV failed to live up to expectations and was lucky to come away with a point after 1-1 draw away to Bundesliga newcomers Freiburg.
