RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo snapped the seven-game winning streak of Goias with a 3-1 home victory on Sunday in the Brazilian soccer championship.
With the win, Sao Paulo, coached by Ricardo Gomes, reached their best ranking of the 4th in this year's competition, keeping their hopes of winning another title.
Sao Paulo scored their first goal just before the end of the first half's stoppage time when Washington stood his ground and headed a ball into the back of the net, giving his team momentum entering halftime.
The home team scored again in the 78th minute as Jorge Wagner out-jumped the defense off a Hernanes corner kick and headed the ball into the far side of the net.
Goias responded with their only goal of the match on 86 minutes when Bruno Meneghel dribbled through the Sao Paulo defense, leaving one defender on the ground, and blasted the ball in.
Sao Paulo earned one last goal in the stoppage time of the second half. Off an assist from Hernanes, Borges advanced towards the Goais goal and slid the ball underneath a charging goalie.
The home side celebrates their entrance to the top four teams of the Brazilian Championship with 30 points, while Goias remain in second place with 32 points.
