Mexican champion Pumas travels to Honduras for Real Espana match

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Pumas, the current champion of the Mexican soccer league, flew to Honduras city San Pedro Sula on Wednesday for a second round match in the group phase of the regional Champions League against Real Espana.

The team, which represents the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will play Honduras league champion Real Espana later on Wednesday.

It will be missing strikers Fernando Morales and Ismael Iniguez, both staying at home with injuries.

The UNAM team defeated Guatemalan champion Comunicaciones 1-0 in the first round of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) league, nicknamed the Concachampiones. However, it began its domestic campaign with five straight losses.

Asked at an airport press conference if the team planned to field a team of new players, Pumas' director of sport said that he had discussed it with team manager Ricardo Ferretti and had chosen instead to send the established first team.

"We had planned to do what we had been doing with another lineup, but speaking to Ferretti and his advisors we reached the conclusion that it is better to be together," he said.

He said the goal was to create team spirit in the regular players, by fielding them in similar or unchanged lineups across several tournaments.

The goal is "more games, more plays and above all to be together," he said.

"This current situation is not easy and we have repeated that with unity we can make progress," he said.
