Boy killed after football rumpus in Zambia

LUSAKA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Police officers in northern Zambia's Kaputa district have killed a 13-year-old boy after crowd disturbance following a football match by local teams, the Post of Zambia reported on Friday.

Police used teargas to disperse the riotous crowd but in the process ended killing the boy, according to the Post.

Both District Commissioner Mwambwa Njalamimba and the boy's stepfather Joseph Santa confirmed the development, the Post said.

The boy's stepfather said a riot erupted on a football match at a local school and police used teargas to disperse the crowd, adding that the police officers threw a teargas canister directly at the boy.

"The canister was thrown directly at the boy and he started vomiting and later died around 22:00 hours p.m on Sunday, so we are trying to follow up with the police," Santa was quoted by the paper.

The District Commissioner told the paper that he had been informed about the incidence but declined to give further details.
